In the traditional ARPG - you can look forward to "toys" like unique active powers or unique weapons with completely unique properties and effects (like in Hellgate or Borderlands). Demon's Souls was more about weapons being effective against certain enemies and easier to wield, etc. Obviously that makes a difference - but it's not as "exciting" as looking forward to getting unique powers.
