OK so finished the main quest (Nerevarine) at level 29 which I thought was surprisingly good. I'm playing a dark elf with 100% destruction and 100 short sword, 81 light armor (glass). Lots of summoning enchantments to spawn these simultaneously:
- Fire antioch
- Dremora
- Greater Bone Walker
- skamp
- skeleton minion

I thought I was pretty tough…. until I met that crazy SOB in the Mournhold courtyard with ebony armor. I can't kill him, but I have him floating in the moat. As long as I don't go near the moat he is a non factor.

Then I went to the Mournhold sewers under Godreach. Holy CRAP!!! These goblins carve through my summoned defenses in 2 seconds and pound me to dust 2 seconds later. With my agility at 65 I'm knocked down pretty consistently - which is a recipe for certain death.

So I went back in Vvardenfell scrapping the magic emphasis and developing for full tilt melee. I'm now level 36, with 100 strength, 100 Agility, 80 Heavy Armor (Ebony) 90 long sword.

In short, I've come to the conclusion that I have to be as heavy in Melee as I am in magic, since Magic it is pretty useless in Mournhold it seems… All the goblins are resisting magic anyway.

The balance of Tribunal just seems odd to me. Oh well, at least its a new challenge….

Oh yes. I found Tribunal extremely difficult with my then level 20something character. When I replayed Morrowind/w Addons a year or so later, I started fresh with a level 1 character, chose to do the Tribunal content first, and lo and behold: It was far easier for him than it had been for my first char, and that was not because of their skills and attribute choices (which were rather similar). The main reason was that the low level Tribunal enemies had low level equipment without enchantments. On my third Morrowind playthrough I did exactly the same: started Tribunal as soon as possible. The character was very different then, but he, too, didn't experience the huge problems my first char had.

Interesting! Well initially I was frustrated, but I have to applaud Bethesda in that you can continue to develop your character and even do a complete 180 and go from a robe wearing destruction specialist to a heavy armor melee tank. By level 29 I had enough cash to get my skills to a reasonable level to survive the environment via training (to around 40), and now I'm adventuring to get the stats to maximum. I might as well do the fighters guild (I'm head of Mages + Telvanni).

Anyway Morrowind deserves the attention it still gets today. I just hope my upcoming rerun through Oblivion will prove as interesting, and someday I'll get back to my Nord who has been waiting patiently for my return in his house in Windhelm :)

Hmm I remember not having much trouble except for Mr. Lucky in the courtyard and the big bad final Miss Boss.

My trick? Do you want to know?

Massive absorb health enchantments on a Daedric Wakasaki (or whatever). Pure awesome. Plus absorb health on a couple rings, as ranged weapons.

I don't remember struggling too much with Tribunal. The only problems I had were against the Black Dart gang. If they saw you coming they would shoot darts at you that could one-shot kill you. I remember dying quite a few times at that part before finally getting lucky and not getting hit by the dart and was able to kill them. The rest of the content wasn't too hard for my level 26 or so melee character, if I recall.

Folks complain that you can do that, but it really requires knowledge of exploits and location(s) of item(s). For me, it's OK if there are shortcuts I'll never use anyway.

After getting all my stats to 100 and morphing my mage into an Ebony Armor / Daedric longsword wielder I got by all the areas, killed the courtyard assassin and took out the dart gang, goblin bosses etc... I'm not sure how a pure magic user is supposed to do Tribunal though. No matter...

Finished Tribunal. I'm going to have to say it was pretty mediocre with waaaaay to much back tracking and "leadless" quests. The factions weren't really factions and conflict never materializes, a facade of choice. Anyway it was a bit of a letdown.

On to Bloodmoon.
