The ever-popular "Currently Listening" thread

at Tiger Army concert, listening to crappy music before the band comes out. Sorta drunk. Should be a good show, its pretty rare that they come to SD.

Edit- opening act 1 "stellar corpses" fkn rocked. Chick guitarist that wasnt scared to solo, she was quite good. Solid horror punk, during the song Evil Dead i noticd the singer kinda looks like Bruce Campbell!!!

Edit- old man markley. Decent enough bluegrass band, but reallly??? A bluegrass band just about had all us nodding off. Wrong band.

Edit- next morning: omfg Tiger Army destroyed the place. Awesome show. So hungover ....

Inspired by the Original Sin kickstarter, I'm listening to Kirill Pokrovsky's Music, including the Divinity soundtracks and two albums I didn't even know existed, all free for download. Masterful.

Yep, I've had that stuff on my iPod (and now iPhone and Galaxy SIII) for ages!

I can't stop listening to the new Ghost (aka Ghost B.C. in the US) album "Infestissuman". Amazingly catchy songwriting. Ghost sound like the child of an unholy union between Blue Oyster Cult and Mercyful Fate, with a dash of 70's prog.

I love Ghost! their Opus Eponymous release took me by surprise, possessed me and I couldnt stop listening to it for weeks. The vocals are awesome, the keyboards are perfect, and they have a great classic metal guitar sound. I'm delighted to see there's some new material, instant buy.

Wonder why they changed their name to Ghost B.C. tho??? Must have been some copyright bullshit.

It's rumored that the vocalist is actually King Diamond's son…

edit- well here's the answer thanks to google: Ghost forced to change name to Ghost B.C.

Unfortunately there's no California shows local to me in those 2013 show dates!

…..then i flip over to one of my other new faves (a band that DTE may like), and have to admit… for all my doom and gloom satanic metal musings, I like Of Monsters and Men

I think it's a me-and-my-wife thing. good band for a lovey dovey couple to rock out to ='.'=

Yeah the name problem probably was there are several bands named Ghost and one of them might have been first on the US scene before them. Possibly the Japanese psych-rock Ghost, which has been around a very long time (they are also quite good). Who knows who required them to change it though, might have been their label who wanted to avoid confusion.

Huh... son of King Diamond - now that would be fitting!

That's too bad they aren't playing near you Sammy. I'll be seeing them this Friday in Portland!

jealous!!!!!!!!!! but happy for you man

For some reason, good bands seem to always skip San Diego. It was a miracle Tiger Army stopped by the other night.

Okay, let me post another new discovery of mine: Orchid - "heretic"

I love Orchid! They have a new album coming out in May, "The Mouths of Madness" - I'm stoked for that:

Now for something contrarian. ;)

I am still reveling in retro nostalgia, most currently from an old album I have been meaning to digitize from my original vinyl for years. It finally got its well worth due. Although the vinyl is pristine 1982 vintage, it took a couple of evenings to manually edit the waveforms for all the tracks and convert them to MP3s. The original pressing had quite a few defects (snaps, pops, and crackles), but my digital versions now sound much cleaner than the vinyl did in 1982.

The album is Animation by Jon Anderson. His best solo effort, and I think a masterpiece. There isn't a bum track on the album. I think this work is on par with some of the best Yes albums. The musicians are phenomenal and tight (Clem Clemson, Simon Phillips, David Sancious, among others). This album was among the first in a long trend of world music influence on rock music. The music holds up very well after 30 (gasp!) years. It's still a sublime listening experience. Little (except Anderson's later work) has really sounded like it since. Lots of quirky odd syncopated beats, and vocal phrasings, electronic beeps and blips and chimes, but best of all very melodic. "Musical" without a doubt.

The nostalgia is VERY strong with this album since I saw it performed live in concert in San Diego at the outdoor Festival theater in Balboa Park. The theater was new at the time. It had been recently built as temporary outdoor amphitheater after the original Old Globe burned down. It was outdoors in the trees on a warm evening. The acoustics were perfect, and it was a very small venue and intimate. It was a clear night, and in the middle of the performance Jon pointed into the sky so we could all observe an eclipse of the moon. Very magical evening. It was one of the concerts of my life. The performances were flawless.

Anyway, enough reminiscing. All tracks on this album are excellent, but the title track is my favorite. It's a very touching celebration of the birth of Jon's first child and his witnessing it. This youtube is just OK in quality compared to my cleaned up digital version, but is better than nothing.

Animation

The only official CD issue was done in 2006, and apparently the sound quality is abysmal. Some say it sounds like it was mastered off an old record rather than master tapes. In any case, the equalization is a truly terrible "U" spectrum. The mid range, and in particular Jon's voice, is diminished in the overpowered the bass and treble. This remaster is a disservice to the original work.

Orchid is like Black Sabbath for the 2000s. Some good old-school sound there..

Been listening to some Chili Peppers lately. The video for Dani California is simple yet brilliant. Definitely my favorite from them.

A good one. Many of their videos are quite funny, more creative than most..

Pibbur who wonders why he hasn't got any RHCP albums. And who is somewhat excited about the upcoming Dream Theater live DVD/blu-ray thing.

Thought I'd post some good/fun stuff I've been enjoying. Most of the songs are new….ish.

The Most Beautiful Music video I have ever seen. A great song by Alcest. Conveniently, there is an english translation of the lyrics below the video. The lyrics are extremely beautiful as well.

It's a truly sad day for metalheads…

RIP Jeff Hanneman

Didn't know about it until I saw your post. Sad news indeed, and he was only 49.

I used to be a pretty big fan of Slayer. Reign in Blood was my favorite album, and imo is easily one of the top 10 heavy metal albums of all time.

bummer!
I agree on Reign in Blood, it definitely kicked the living hell out of everything else that was out at the time.

Going to listen to a little South of Heaven, their 2nd best work imo
