GOG releases - modifying audio…or something?

Picked up a few GOG releases a while back for convenience:
Arx Fatalis and Rune

I own both of the games as boxed originals as well.

I noticed when installing the GOG releases that the audio would cut out intermittently in both games during the video cut scenes - and with Rune even during gameplay. This led me to install the games from the original CDs, patch them up and try them. The installs from the original CDs worked perfectly with no dropped audio.

I wonder what GOG is doing to their releases that may cause this? Perhaps something to do with making the games compatible with newer versions of Windows modifying something from the original in some way?

I'm using Windows XP/SP3 - going to update to Windows 7 shortly.

Anyone else experience this?

Looked into this a but more. It seems they (or the licensor) are indeed modifying some hooks from the original with the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit/Administrator.

Interesting. I have not had or noticed any of these problems, but what you described is a symptom of a lossy type audio compression that crackers used to use in the past to re-package games to a lower disk space!
