XCom2 opinions

Timed missions were my least favourite part of Xcom EW. It totally kills the tension you get by having the choice to stay put or push on.

When folk say "most" are timed, what are we talking? 90%? 80%?

More like 40% for me. I've played about 30 hours so far.

I had read about all the issues this game was having, which put me off, but the concept made me intrigued enough to look at the original XCom (I mean, the one released just a few years ago) and I found it on sale at steam and bought it. I played like, the first mission, and it seemed like a very fun game. I'm a sucker for the familiar Sci-Fi theme of humans defending against an alien invasion, and enjoy how the game very much puts that theme deeply into the ambience, story and world of the game.

I would recommend getting the first game if you don't have it, and are intrigued by the theme.

XCOM is a solid experience. Make sure you play with the Enemy Within expansion.

I agree, but I don't seem to take advantage of much that Within added. I did MEC's one time and was sorely disappointed, and I've settled on a "standard" genetics package that I give my main troops near the end of the game. So the meld gameplay is largely wasted on me. I do enjoy the extra missions, but could probably live without them if I had to. I always go with Within rather than the vanilla because I very much like the "unequip all" button, but that's a lousy reason.

I share your sentiments regarding the MEC's, never figured out how to use them properly. They mostly seemed like heavies without cover to me.

I do however appreciate the possibility of extra customisation of soldiers through genetics, and use that fairly extensively.

Extra missions are nice, if for no other reason than the game having way to few maps to start with.

I got the game (I couldn't resist - I really should be going back and finishing Metal Gear Solid 5 but I love XCom so much!) and decided to play it on Commander difficulty. Less than 10 hours and a ton of save-scumming later and my squad looks like this:

838347F2210CB8FC9362CACFF98D9D0FF03CF3E6

Yeah, the difficulty has definitely been pushed up.

A question for game owners. Is the random seed still set and cannot be cheated via load (much like the original one)?
Hmm, I thought it was re-seeding. However, I tried to search for the option to change it and everyone asking for the change is trying to turn the random seeding on! Maybe I just did somewhat different things after loading?

P.S. The game has about 2 MEGABYTES worth of ini files you can tweak!

It's basically no bugs game* so you definetly should.

* Except for spying optional goals that can be break because overlapping scripts where only mission replay can help. Also there is a possibility of savegame loss, but if it ever happens to you, just pop on Steam guides and find the one of mine with all missions savegames included so you don't have to restart from the beginning.

I got myself stuck on MGS5's 'convoy' mission. Something pops out in that one that I'm just not able to handle so I need to restart from before the mission and "level up" (gear up?) some more until I can survive it. I'll be back. But XCOM 2 has me right now.

Normal difficulty in XCom is definitely much more fun for me. I'm getting beat every now and again but not multiple times per mission like Commander was doing.

Convoy? You mean the one where the prime goal is to secure the truck but when you come close, you're ambushed by godlikes? :D

Easy peasy solution: wait till godlikes get a bit away from the truck then jump in the truck and drive away from hotzone (hotzone is what's inside the red border on the minimap).

Not so easypeasy, ride to airport then sneak from behind near the truck and wait till tanks arrive. Force godlikes to appear by getting near the truck then jump inside any of those two tanks and blast them. Because tanks become neutral when godlikes appear.
If they somehow destroy one of tanks, jump inside the other one and finish them off.
Why not *that* easy? Because if you're not careful, you'll blast the truck and that's mission failed.

A bit harder: use D-Walker with minigun equipped to kill godlikes.

You want optional goals done? You need better equipment which you don't have, so you'll return later. If.
One thing if you'll replay for all optional goals there - do not take D-dog with you as he'll break "listen to chatty" sequences (bug).

Unfortunately the godlikes slaughter me before I can even run away. Maybe I can use some of those decoy things… anyway, speaking of godlikes…

OMG MUTONS! I got my armor upgrade and was feeling great about my next mission. I ran up against a robot and my specialist dropped it with the rapid fire add-on. HAR! I got surprised by a shape shifter but everyone was in pretty good position so I was able to deal with it with only a little damage - but woke up a muton and two stun stick soldiers in the process. The muton's grenade hurt three of my soldiers bad. It also made a bus blow up, killing one of the three. Then the two stun sticks ran up and finished off another soldier. Sheeesh!

I've had three or four missions in Kansas City now. Either this game is taking a peek at my IP address to figure out where I am or there's some Mets fans in Firaxis looking to drop a bunch of aliens on us.

Finished it and loved it. The final battle was way better than in the first game where a pair of snipers could end the game on the first turn. I'll definitely play it through again once more DLC shows up.

There were some animation bugs and some really odd ones where you could shoot through walls (leaving a mark on the wall!) but nothing horrible. The new features are more than worth it.

XCom 2 was interesting as its biggest addition was sim like features to customize the squad.

I fiddled with it a bit and played a few missions. I'll probably pick a mod for the timers when I give it a real play through.

That will be after all the content and patches are released. Just as I it is for 99.5% of games that are released nowadays.

This is one I'll play through two or three times so I'm not so worried about waiting on it.

Those timers, though, are needed. When there's no timer, the game gets noticeably easier. You can just turtle along and whatever aliens you find get blasted by overwatch shots before they can get into cover. If you do play with timers removed, you better up the difficulty to compensate. You might make a conscious effort to go easy on the Specialist class, too. They're even better at overwatching than the Support class of old so having no timers will give them a boost.

Yeah, that's the dilemma, I want to keep the difficulty high but I don't want to be rushed. I play turn based games to take my time and relax.

I believe there's mods that just add a couple rounds too, I'll have to fiddle around to get the right balance I guess.

Sakichop,

If you find this mod that add some rounds to the game, please post the link here or PVT me.

Thank you!

There's a mod that delays starting the timer until you lose concealment. Probably more realistic honestly. As long as you aren't abusing the mechanic, that should create a couple more turns for you without totally eliminating the timer.

here is one that allows you to add turns either globally or to individual missions. Haven't tried it yet myself though.
