A 'like' button is useful at eliminating posts that amount to little more than "I agree", since it lets people express that sentiment without posting. It's not really necessary, but there's no real downside.

contrary to many sites where they "fist" and "bump" each other only the people that have a soft spot for each other.

This has not been my experience.
