Or - since some times the definition may be a bit blurry - favourite game-which-very-few-would-call-an-rpg?

Here are my top 3 in no particular order:

  • Day of the Tentacle
  • Half Life 1
  • Heretic II (sadly a commercial flop)

Eh... top 5.

  • Alpha Centauri/Alien Crossfire
  • Chronomaster

pibbur who may want to change the list when (if) he remembers more of the games he has played

Favorite... Pay2win phonegames with gambling inside. :)

Good question! For me:

Quake 1 - still go back to it occasionally now!

Most of the early Street Fighters, but particularly Alpha 2. I could never get into Mortal Kombat or Tekken though.

The new Alien game was great. I also liked the new DOOM and Wolfenstein (haven't played the second one yet though). I'm looking forward to the new DOOM.

The Jedi Knight games, particularly Outcast and Academy.

Erm... also have fond memories of plenty of C64 / speccy games like Paradroid and Target: Renegade (which I replayed recently on my phone) but I won't bore you with those. :)

Not sure I have a favorite - seems every year or two or three a new non-rpg arrives that was better than the previous games. I do have found memory of half life and the letter I wrote to the developers. Basically there was an area (glitch) where I couldn't go up the steps - so i wrote to let them know that my legs were too short and asked them if they could send me a version of the game with longer legs....

Among several :

- Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
- The Secret of Monkey Island ( aka Monkey Island I )
- Rayman, almost any game
- Zoo Tycoon, the first one from Blue Fang Games / Microsoft
- Tropico 1
- Commander Keen 4 & 5

I think, that's it.

Happy to see all the Alpha Centauri love in this thread. It's still my sentimental favorite offshoot of the Civ series, despite all the more recent advances in gameplay. Sid Meier has taken a lot of my time.

I used to play a lot of city-building games like Zeus and Pharaoh, though I haven't been back to them in a while. What's the best modern equivalent? The subgenre seems to have faded away.

Also storytelling games like the Telltale catalog, Life is Strange, Choice of Games etc. (yes, I'm pimping "Choice of" with a link as a friend started the company.)

Thief, Thief 2, maybe even Thief 3, BUT NOT PART 4! NO SIR! Sorry. Got carried away.
Archimedean Dynasty / Schleichfahrt, AquaNox
Burnout Paradise City
Carmageddon
Pirates!
The Settlers 2
MDK
Earthworm Jim
Civilization 3
Alien vs. Predator 2
Monkey Island (only part 1 and 2, never liked the graphical style of the newer ones)

I guess that covers all of it. Some action, some racing, some strategy, some adventure…

Edit: Oh damn, I forgot the Mechwarrior series. So yeah, those.
