The J-RPG Bravely Default II will be released for the PC on September 2 and can now be pre-purchased:

Introduction

Fire, Water, Wind, Earth, nature's masters,
The Crystals' power exceeds the hand of man,
And if unleashed, would bring down death, disaster,
Calamity and blight upon the land.
- Ancient quatrain of Kingdom Musa

Guided by fate, it's up to you to stop the forces that threaten these heroes and all of Excillant.

A new entry in the "Bravely" series
A new world, a new story, and all-new Heroes of Light
"Four new Heroes of Light emerge"

Characters

Seth
A young sailor who drifts to the continent of Excillant and is the main character of this story. Meet Gloria, an exiled princess whose kingdom was robbed of its Crystals, and set out on a journey to recover them with her.

Gloria
The princess of Musa, a kingdom that once watched over the harmony of the world - but the loss of the kingdom's Crystals led Musa to destruction. Having fallen into despair and gone into hiding, she decides to embark on a journey to retrieve the Crystals.

Adelle
A mercenary for hire. She travels with Elvis as his bodyguard in his search for an asterisk.

Elvis
A scholar who travels the world. Embark on a journey in search of a particular asterisk needed to unravel the last spellbook left by his master.

System

In addition to a traditional, turn-based battle system that combines jobs and abilities, you can enjoy innovative and strategic battles unique to the Bravely series by taking control of your turns via the Brave and Default system.

Brave and Default
Brave Points (BP) dictate how many actions a character can use in a single turn. Players can have characters 'Default' to stock up to three additional BP to use in a turn, or characters can 'Brave', to use more than one BP to perform multiple actions. Balancing stockpiling and using BP is a key component in battle strategy.

Jobs and Abilities
Each character can exhibit both a primary and secondary job class, with each job specializing in different abilities. Combining jobs allow you to handle two abilities simultaneously. You can create an all-rounder balanced in offense and defense, or perhaps a character that specializes in magic. Your tactics and how you develop each character are up to you.

Acquire New Jobs
"Asterisk bearers" will often block your path forward. By defeating them, you will obtain an Asterisk that enables you to change jobs.

A classic RPG with turn-based combat - nice, but a bit on the expensive end.

Doesn't answer the question on why the first game was never ported but the second game was. So yeah I'm waiting maybe you can e-mail Square Enix for us.:p

Doubt they would reply to a small forum site like ours though.

The first game was on the Nintendo DS and (I believe) used some features of the DS. It hasn't (to my knowledge) been ported anywhere.

DS games used two screens in odd proportions, and tended to have pretty low poly graphics and art assets which would not necessarily work well on PC. I'm not saying it *can't* work (they converted the notoriously DS-specific "The World Ends With You" to single-screen Switch, for example) but it'd be a significant project.

I played this one (on Switch) through to the final boss (who destroyed me) at which point I moved on. I loved my time with it until that point. It is particularly good for players who like to figure out class/job/ability combinations for their party members to min/max things, as there's a lot of potential to mix and match jobs (each character can have two classes/jobs from a list of 20+, and mix and match any learned passives).

You do not need to have played the previous game at all.

Both this and Octopath Traveller are love letters to bygone eras of turn based RPGs, although both suffer the same flaw that their stories were not quite punchy/engaging enough to make them truly great/essential.

Again still makes no sense to port a sequel to a platform who never played the first. Also to be blunt not every port on the PC from Square Enix is good nowadays.

Look at the various early Final Fantasy and other PS1-PS2 JRPG games on Steam.

Bravely Default II was done in Unreal Engine and was originally on a system that displayed in 720p (the Switch) so it was likely comparatively easy to port over to PC

The old Bravely Default was done in some propriety engine used by Square (who knows how well that would work with a PC port) and was made for a system with a resolution of (2 screens of) something like 320x240 pixels. Square-Enix don't seem to do PC ports on most (if not all) of their DS catalogue, either, not even the big sellers. I guess they put them in the too-hard basket for porting.

It's a stand alone sequel. The story/characters are unrelated to those in the first game.

The first game was released on the Nintendo 3DS. Releasing it on the PC would require reworking the whole game to run on a different screen format and likely a different engine.

Personally, I am excited for this. This game always looked appealing to me, since I love classic JRPGs, especially those that have a job system. But I do not own a Switch. The Steam reveal was a pleasant surprise.

I'm with Couch here, this looks like a game I'd quite enjoy, yet I'm highly unlikely to purchase the second without having played the first. It just seems wrong to me, so I'll be hoping to see the first one pop up shortly for us computer folk.

It is a successor only in name. Part 2 has nothing to do with part 1.

I played the demo on the Switch and found it to be quite good. If the port is handled well, I'd encourage anyone who like JRPGs to give it a try.

Yeah I pity the fools who have to translate Japanese to English. Sometimes the literal translation doesn't fit. Just check out the Engrish as the slang goes on imported games.

Also again good answers but not the one I'm looking for.:p

Have the Switch version ready in my backlog. Just waiting for right mood to fire it up. Played first one on 3DS and liked it a lot till one point in story when I was supposed to literally repeat what I already did (time travelling). Hope this one is designed better and there are no such cheap tricks to stretch gameplay time. By the way there is also Bravely Second on 3DS, so this is actually 3rd game in series.

For what it is worth, Bravely 2 isn't even the second game or sequel.

The first game "Bravely Default: Flying Fairy" (yes, really) had a story-followup sequel called "Bravely Second: End Layer" also on 3DS.

In fact, if we're being technical, Bravely Default was a sequel to Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light on DS. Which itself was a spin-off from the main Final Fantasy series, drawing inspiration primarily from the numbers 3,4 and 5.

(breathe)

Back to this Steam game, it originated on Switch as others have said, and AFAIK the only connection to the previous game is the concept of crystals and four heroes of light. That and the job system. All of these can be found in various Final Fantasy titles long before appearing in Bravely.

ie. skipping Bravely because you didn't play the DS games is like skipping a Final Fantasy or Tales of game because you didn't play every previous one(s). Or, on PC, like skipping Might and Magic or Ultima games because you haven't beaten every previous iteration. Of course, some people will feel that way, I suppose, and gamers of a certain age *will* have played many of those games chronologically. Each to their own, I guess.

Now after reading Irien's post, even more than this game I think I truly want to play the first Bravely Default. That, however, won't stop me from getting this newer version at some point, likely a sale.
