I finished the game today by beating the final boss after 226 hours.

Oldschool, challenging (no handholding), great story and interesting characters - each with their own backstory - highly recommended!

Yikes - it took you 226 hours to beat the final boss? :)

JK. The game really has that much content?

Looks interesting and I have never heard of it before.
@HiddenX;
Can elaborate on the combat system? Is it true turn-based or some timing shenanigans?

The combat system is a true turn-based system.
Faster (stat based) characters get the next round faster.

You have 4 party members out of 16.

All 16 characters have unique skills, so they are a class of their own.

Not all characters are available from day 1 - go questing to find them.

You have to build up nearly all of them, because for some bosses you need specialists.

The game has ca. 150 hours of normal content.

But if you want to get every achievement (there are 232) some grinding is involved and you get easily over 200 hours.

The final 3 bosses cost a lot of time as well - you have to study their tactics and build parties to beat them.

I’ve also been enjoying the game. It’s rather rough around the edges at times but something about it keeps me coming back.

How does it compare to the legend of heroes series ?

My guess is that The Great Gaias is more CRPG-ish while Legend of Heroes is a JRPG. I played a bit of Trails in the Sky and didn't care for it much, while this game seems to tick all the right boxes for me and take great advantage of the RPGMaker engine.

Loving this game but I'm well and truly stuck at the moment. I believe I'm in chapter five, and in a series of quest for both Quathorn and Furi. I completed Q's quest so far, but I'm stuck on Furi's, where you have to cut grass then feed the chickens and finally cook/eat the egg. I get that you must need to feed the cattle and do something with them, but for the life of me I'm not figuring it out. I've been stuck at this part for three days and could use a tip if anyone else has played this glorious game!

Eating an egg is sufficient nourrishement for Furi to break the rock to the pen.

Yeah I've broken the rock but I think I need to do something with the cattle as well, and I cannot seem to figure out that part, fiddled with it this morning and I'm still stuck. I feed the cattle some grass and waited like eight hours but nothing seems to happen. Furi complains about not being able to see or function in the dark when it's nighttime, so I don't know if that's an issue I need to overcome as well.

From the guide:
Items: Black Pearl, Grass x14, Wood x8

You need Mandragora Root, Sulfurous Ash and Mushrooms.
Use the Scythe to cut grass and an Axe to chop wood. Feed Grass to the chickens. Rest 4 Hours to get an Egg. Cook and eat it. Now use the Pickaxe to get rid of the boulder blocking your way to the cows and you obtain the needed Sulfurous Ash. Feed to cows. Come back at night to find Mushrooms. Plant some Seeds there and water them. Wait until night to get the Mandragoa Root with the spade.
Create the Recall Potion and use it.

While I usually never read a guide before finishing a game, I did check this one out just yesterday. I wouldn't have figured out the egg part without it!! The part about what exactly to do with the cattle is too vague though, and since Furi seems almost non-functional at night, I'm not sure how to continue. I'll just take a break for now and try it again in a few days, maybe something else will occur to me.

I remember that I had some problems with this quest as well, but it is to long ago to rembember exactly what went wrong.

Maybe you have to experiment with evening/night times.

Crise - do people figure all that crap out on their own? Does the game provide enough hints to know what to do ?

I did get some help from the people at the Gaia forums, so I was able to get past that hurdle. It truly had me stumped, I don't ever peruse cheat guides until I first complete a game, but I had no choice with this one. Perhaps my IQ has dropped since Wizardry/Bard's Tale games!

And no, this was some sort of blind side quest, so it never actually appeared in the journal, there was no help or hints from the quest section within the game. I'm not even sure I HAD to do this quest, but I do try to complete any and all content.
