Overseer's Log: 1st Granite, 1052, Early Spring

Do you know what it is about the air outside that makes me so sick?
It's that damn stench! It smells like a barrel of rotten turtles soaked
in elven vomit! I couldn't sleep at all during the long journey here last year.
So when we finally got to sleep underground for the first time in a long while
- with earth around me, earth above my head and earth below my rugged arse -
it felt as good as being in the arms of a fat hairy dwarven wench!

That stench.. now that spring has arrived it's starting to seep in through the
cracks again. I wonder if that's what has gotten poor Oltarked so jumpy?
He is mumbling about that river all the damn time. They say he's been having
nightmares too.

Truth be told, I didn't like this place from the beginning.
Also, I have to admit that... in some way I do understand him. There is something...
threatening us. But as any sane dwarf knows - the threat is coming from above NOT
from below.

All along I've been saying that we must dig deeper, fill the corridors with
lethal traps and use the materials we've gathered to craft an arsenal of weapons
that would make our ancestors proud! And now that I've been chosen by my comrades
to oversee Gatelightning - by my grandmother's black beard we will!

Poor Oltarked did a good job with the farms and the workshops, and he's
one hell of a mason. I'm gonna have him use all of his time building magnificent
things from stone. Perhaps that will help him to get his head straight and thoughts
sorted out. A dwarf should spend his time building things, not obsessing about rivers
or wondering what kind of trinkets would the humies or elven tree-huggers like to trade.
Speaking of tree-huggers... We need to find a way to flush them, their reed skirts
and their stench out of our stronghold before they arrive.

There are things that need to be done.

Luckily Oltarked made sure we'll never run out of alcohol.
Yes... He is a dwarf after all... He is gonna be fine.

Overseer's Log: 1st Felsite, 1052, Late Spring

Ah... the screms of horror... tree-huggers didn't see it coming.
We were able to build the the flushing system in time, as I had hoped.

The system is controlled by two levers that we placed between the trading
depot and the main staircase. The southern lever fills the corridor with water,
and the northern one drains it. I think we should build some more stonefall traps
too in the corridors before the flushing system. They are very simple, yet effective.
Boulders crashing down from the ceiling should make unwanted visitors feel
pretty damn unwelcome, as my grandmother - the one with the black beard -
used to say. We dug some more storage space too near the trading depot.

The now deceased tree-hugger caravan had brought many goods with them...
some of them usefull... all of them ours! I wonder how the tree-hugger
community will react to our brief but nonetheless very pleasing "flushing" episode.
have they got the guts to attack us? We shall see. I am going to cut of all acces
just in case, as we are only beginning to forge the weapons and armor very
much required when dealing with scum. The previous overseer has been very busy
with the masoning indeed, which gives me yet another reason to smile as I am writing
this now.

So, spring has brought us sickening odours and a caravan of tree-huggers to test
our flushing system, but is does not end there. Gatelightning got a whole bunch of
new inhabitants! Yes... a group of migrants arrived bringing some very much needed
skills, work force and some animals too. It truly was like a breath of fresh air.
All the imaginable jokes about how an alligator becomes a glove or a boot have been
heard... several times. It was becoming quite old so I'm happy to have them here.

Nice writing though from the overseers-at-large. I'll just avoid staring at the screenshots in future. :)

The display width of images in this forum is limited to 564 pixels, if they are too large they are scaled down. Right click on them and select "view image" to see them in full-size. PJ and Zakhary could also make the images direct links.

"Open Image" seems to work in opera.
Just think of them as thumbnails that must be clicked
with the RMB instead of LMB :D

You guys are in for a ride. PJ sure didn't make things easy for us and in addition... I've phucked up everything quite nicely.

Nice thread :), darn I need to pay more attention to the forum..I had completly missed this. I kinda like DF, in fact I even sent some 'news' report to the watch about it a while back.. I need to get back into it (in fact I plan to go do that right after Im done posting here heh.) used to play but it sorta slipped out of my mind when I last reinstalled my system and what not.

Overseer's Log - 27th Galena, 1052, Late Summer

Sad news. We have lost Tulon Etostkeskal the soap maker to an alligator
outside the fortress. We are also running out of wood but the entrance to
our fortress is being patrolled by very agressive wild animals, it seems.
We also ran out of barrels so I had to cut back the booze production a bit,
not that we are running out of booze, though. Still, when talking about
booze.. there is no such thing as "enough". We also have a nice stock of
prepared meals.

I have already forged some plate armor, short swords and shields. Also I have
assigned a squad dwarves to begin training and preparing for combat. I like to
visit the barracks every once in a while to watch them progress. It feels
great to see the weapons and armor I have made in use. The warriors are
always heavily bruised, unconscious or both. So it is obvious they are
progressing.

Thob Nicatlikot the engraver has been working on the meeting hall,
it will be a much better place to eat and drink.

Meng Onshenvucar the new metalsmith started acting very strange suddenly
and he has now claimed the Metalsmith's forge to himself, I did not really
mind because I felt like getting some sleep anyway. I've been thinking about
making a second anvil though.

Our two miners have been busy too lately. I sent them on a mission
to do some serious digging. They came upon some nice materials.

Some humies came... They fought some of the alligators at our gates.
They then entered our fortress. The flushing system worked great once again.
They had pretty nice stuff with them too. They did not scream as loud as
the tree-huggers did. Still, it was pathetic. They had some logs with them.

Next up, are the stonefall traps. The lads keep telling me that 10
would be more than enough, but I was thinking more along the lines of
making that 20.

It should not be a problem. Im a DF newbie myself too. Just make sure you've got a grasp of the basics. I have just recently learned the basics and I'm still lost most of the time with many things in DF.. but as you can see that has not hindered me in anyway.

We just have to hope that there are no buttwipes here that take things too seriously and spoil the fun by whining and complaining about the (poor) choices that a previous overseer might have made.

Edit: You must be willing and able to post the overseer's log here though. That's an absolute must. Speaking of which, I'll try to post another log entry for the autumn part later tonight.
 
Um... I thought "poor choices by the previous overseer" was sort of one of the main points of the exercise. Where's the fun if you inherit a perfectly-run, superbly-organized, magnificently productive fortress... unless it's turning it into something completely different, of cousre. ;-)

PS. I hope you weren't referring to the current previous overseer's choices, which were, as we all know, paragons of efficiency, organization, and productivity.

Playing the fortress you built has proven to be a great learning experience for me.
Many things that I previously hadn't quite understood now make perfect sense when I had to examine and play such a complex and well thought out fortress.
 
I think I got the basics covered(I survived a couple of winters now :D) but yeah, there is a lot of things I don't know about the game, for example somehow I managed to make my last trade depot unreachable but the wagons had no problem reaching it before :S.

Don't worry guys, I'll make sure I make some unpleasant things to that fortress when comes my turn, like gay-marriages with donkeys etc.
