Sorry for not mentioning the medals 
I'm on my second playthrough now. And I did first notice that the medals actually give you stat boosts in this playthrough.
I agree that 4/5 perhaps is too low, but to me 5 is maybe too much.
I've found that the Treasure Seeking ability is a nice way to get money quick as well as using Robbers.
