Hi all,
After reading about all the G3 bug and polish problems and the fact that I'm being loyal to Aspyr and waiting for the NA release, I've decided to dive into G2/NotR for the first time. I've read plenty about it and have played around with the regular G2 demo a bit, so I'm up to speed on the basics.

The issue is that my playing time is very, very limited. Pretending to be an adult with a job, a wife and two small children means gaming has to take a back seat for the most part. Which brings us to the thread topic. I don't want to waste any time by screwing up my char and having to re-start. So, what I'm looking for from all you G veterens out there is what I should absolutely, positively avoid in order to be able to reasonably complete the game. That includes not having to gimp through re-loading every 5 minutes. I'm not looking for power gaming style tips, like how to achieve the most dps for instance. Not my style. What I am looking for is advice such as "don't put any LP's into skill X. It's an absolute waste because you get it for free half way through the game by completing a quest." That kind of stuff.

Thanks in advance! :D

The first thing I'll say is save often and don't skimp on the number of saves out of laziness ... it is OK to have 20 active saves and several dozen archived ... you never know.

OK. Do not put any learning points into training that stupid amulet that searches stuff for you :D . I know... it might sound strange but there is an amulet in the game that will produce a little firefly-like thingie that will point you towards treasure. It's a neat idea but a complete waste of learning points because you just need to keep your eyes open to find treasure. I trained that amulet to the max rather early in the game and it became pretty damned hard for a while.

Otherwise, there's nothing to worry about. You should try to focus on either 1-handed or 2-handed and either bow or x-bow or leave all of that alone for the most part and invest points in magic (playing a mage is not easy in the beginning) but that's about it.

The game is kinda tough overall with NotR installed. If you want to make it as easy as possible, then I'd recommend to focus on 1-handed (because of its superior speed) and strength. If you time the left/right swinging of the sword right, then you can kill high level mobs early on.
Also, go to Jharkendar (the add-on world) before you go to the Valley of Mines. You will get some nice stuff from playing through the add-on world (note that you can switch between the worlds rather freely so there is no way to miss out on the chance to go to Jharkendar, really).

Battlemage it up. As you train something up it costs more and more LP to get to the next level. I tried to play it as a pure mage but it just got silly, 30LP to increase mana by 5! so i started investing into 1-handed and became a rather badass battlemage. Weaken them with magic and finish them off with the sword! :)

So yeah, i'd agree with Moriendor, train 1-handed first (the beginning really is tough as a mage) and then increase your other skills as you see fit. Skinning animals can bring in some cash but i wouldn't bother with all the hunting skills as the LP is better spent elsewhere.

Gold is cheap as you progress - so collect crap to sell (yes that is time consuming and you have none) and use it to buy ingredients to make sure you have mana potions and strength and dex potions.

The add-on has its own installation program. G2 doesn´t ask about it.

Activate quicksave in the gothic.ini. Remember not to use it when you´re in anything which could be classified as "interaction" - or you could break the savegame. It´s stable enough if you only use it when everything is silent.

Install the rebalancing mod. G2 Gold is too hard for a newbie. The mod makes it easier.

If you don´t have enough time to pick up all the crap you could use some mild cheating: insert 1000 gold every few hours.

Lockpicking is a good skill to have -- even if you go the strength route instead of dexterity (higher dex makes it easier to lockpick). You'll make a lot of cash with all the chests you'll find.

You rock, guys. Thanks for all the tips. I should be getting started early next week, so wish me luck!

How does dexterity figure in? I thought lockpicking was a simple guess the combination/memory game.

Yeah it is but DEX determines whether the pick breaks or not.. so you can try again.

But if you're a bit sneaky then you can just save and reload if you get the combination wrong. Yes it's mild cheating but they should have made the combinations random! :)

Things never to forget:

Save early, save often, and save in more than one slot
Talk to everyone with a name.
Always remember you can't do every quest you get immediately. Come back later when you are stronger.
When you must go to a new area, try to find an escort.
Try to do as much as possible before joining a guild. Then make a special save you can re-use later instead of having to start over again.

I normally chose to be the hunting apprentice, which changes what i do early on. I avoid killing any animals until I get skinning. If ya gotta kill something, you might as well get something out of it right? Also there are two nice DEX based swords in the game you can get early. I train DEX and use one of these sword as soon as I can. Combat becomes much easier then. Later, after you decide what guild you want to play as, you can start training the proper skill(s). Just remember you don't "lose" the LP spent on DEX since it is used for many skills. There are a thousand spoilers i could give you, but not today lol. But here are a few:

Don't buy any armor, you can steal leather armor as soon as you reach Khorinis from Matteo's storehouse(go to the bacl of it, climb up on the wall, jump to the roof, and walk around to the storehouse). Then you can go back outside and give the farmers clothes to Greg.

The first nice DEX based sword is in the area where the ship is. After you have alot of cash you can buy the Master sword from the paladin merchant just outside the ship area. I can't think of his name, but you only get ONE chance to buy it, so have a shitload of cash before talking to him. You should make a save before talking to him and find out if you have enough money. Reload if you don't.

With the stolen armor and pirate's sabre and a little DEX, you should be able to defend yourself early in the game. Good luck.

That's what I did when I had one or two picks left in my inventory, when I had a bunch I didn't care about losing them. You're okay as long as you have one left.
