DA:O Rogue questions

Dragon Age: Origins
My guess would be that it's a class-specific talent, even tho it's not called out in the manual as such in the rogue definition. It's just assumed that anyone playing an RPG will know that, and it says in the trap-making skill that while anyone can lay traps - only rogues can disarm them.

Furthermore, it says nothing about it in the blurb about cunning, so I'd say class specific.

One quick way to find out, make a Dalish warrior or mage and hit the first dungeon!

I was curious because I've never spotted a trap yet, even with Leliana.

What happens? Does it just appear, or does it also have that sparkle effect, like the loot containers?

Plus, the archery tree in this game is so utterly boring….

I don't know, I tried a rogue/human and started with the rapid shot tree and had the best ever result with my test case (the ogre in Ostagar) he went down quickly with rapid shot and suppressing fire after being softened up with a shattering shot. It was truly a different experience from any other character I've had. I went back to my main mage after Fothering so maybe he won't hold up but I'm going back to him later.

It appears with a sort of a red fluorescent glow. No sparkle effect.

I gave Leliana a certain gift
Bronze Symbol of Andraste
that gave her a bonus to Cunning. She finds and disarms traps like crazy now.

That's just the normal approval bonus though, isn't it? For reaching 25, 50, 75 and 90 approval.

You mean I'll be getting 3 more? :wideeyed:

I was experimenting with giving her different gifts and she got the bonus when I gave her that one, so I just assumed it was related to that gift.

Guess I'll have to start paying attention to the numbers now...

Re the gifts: Apparently Sten likes
paintings, Wynne likes books and scrolls, Leliana anything religious, Morrigan likes jewelery, um, Zevran gold, and the Ozamar guy any alcoholic beverage.

My main is a rogue. I find Stealth useless - though I admit I haven't advanced the ranks. All the scripted encounters trigger anyway, so the only advantage is one critical backstab from the first hit. Be interested to see if anyone else sees it differently.

I agree, I like playing a stealthy character but it's useless except for getting the first critical. Scripting prevents you from taking advantage of it. I was stuck on this really tough battle with a dragon, so I thought instead of killing it I'll just sneak past it. So I did that and found it's loot and the way out of the dungeon but I couldn't pick up the loot or open the chest or leave the dungeon, presumably because I hadn't killed the dragon. Useless.

It's related to their overall approval stat, and starting with the third bonus the companion gets quite a big boost to a stat.

Also, notice that some gifts are also labelled as "plot". Intended for one specific companion, they might unlock their personal quest. These should be automatically sent back to your inventory if you give them to the wrong character.

Interesting result of my party's encounter with the high dragon; Shale, Alistair, Morrigan and me were all about levels 15 - 16, and the dragon apparently became harder since last time we left her. Tried 5-6 reloads, almost every time she killed both tanks and mage except my rouge. My guess is that because my rouge had high dexterity level (40), the dragon unable to do much damage, and she slowly dies as i chipping away her health (mostly 30+ damages for each successful ranged attacks)

I haven't tested it myself, but the rogue build threads I have read on the Social Site all seem to agree the full ranks in stealth are needed for both builds.

Full ranks means you get to use stealth in combat, on a ten second cool-down.

So a melée rogue gets to break aggro and position for another backstab. And a bow shot from stealth is supposed to be an auto-crit on hit, so you get a critical every ten seconds.

Does she give nice drake scales? I'm out hunting for my armour.

wesleyclark- yeah, I dont think stealth is useless, as Ive said earlier in essence i feel that stealth is part of the rogue repetoire by default. A rogue without stealth is like a fighter without taunt. But, it's a matter of how many points you want to sink into it when youve got 4 other talent lines going.

BUT, it may be well worth the time - break aggro when youre surrounded and getting pummeled? That's worth it. Stealth then duck out of combat, turn around and chuck a grenade in the middle of the clueless foes! Set a trap then pull them towards you into it. The potentials of max'd stealth are there, it just takes a bit of creativity to really reap the benefits.

The problem isn't just in the tactics used I'd say, it's rather that he actually used a cheat to raise his level, unlock the ranger specialisation, and get the pet.

Can someone explain to me how the Bard talent "Distraction" works?

According to the description, it's supposed to confuse one enemy. The problem is that I can't figure out how to target anyone. You would think that a cursor would appear, like with spells, but nothing happens when I use it in battle.

Stealth is definitely not useless - though it's debatable just HOW useful it is.

But I found it very useful for scouting and mage-battles in particular. Scouting ahead and disarming traps can be very useful, and it can be very useful for spell planning/placement also. But the most important aspect of stealth, to me, was that I could take out 1-2 mages with relative ease by having full stealth.

That's anything but useless, in my opinion.
