Risen - Gimli, Gollum and Pratchett Confirmed

Ah... the polish dubbing of Gothic. My first copy of Gothic was in polish. It sounded amazing. The voice of Diego... those were times. :)

Talk about under-hyping the game, well, their loss i guess.. if i were a dev / publisher i would hype the shit out of it, just like Bethesda did for Morrowind/Oblivion or Ken Levine (Bioshock). Those games sold _extremely_ well. Sure a few people will be annoyed, but not so annoyed that they will refuse to buy the game, it does much more good than bad.

I'm not saying i prefer when eg. Bethesda tells some bullshit story about their AI and then in-game its not like that at all, or Levine saying Bioshock is like System Shock 2 only better, it sells the game and thats whats important if they want to continue what they're doing.

I guess they want to make a good game and not waste money on adds. That's something really great - it's like people made games many years ago when didn't expect loads of cash. They made them because they loved it and made games they want not games that makes money. It's like indie developer that isn't indie. Well, that's why I still have some hope - Piranha Bytes and CDP Red are last commercial developers that make cRPGs (Ossian is a good one too but they need to show a little more).

I'm probably in the minority here, but I'm happy to settle for so-so to down-right hokey voice acting in computer games. I'd rather those dollars go toward other things such as greater interactivity with the world, a really great inventory/quest/map interface, increased variety of all kinds of in game assets such as weapons and armor.

I blame the press for putting too much emphasis on voice acting in games. Again, though, I already know I'm in the minority on this...

I really like this, dialogue and voice acting makes a big difference to me as it can make me much more involved in the quests and the world.

PB wouldn't have done this on their own. I would think this indicates Deep Silver thinks they have a good game on their hands and has spent a little money. It also means that not having these actors doesn't automatically mean DS would give PB that money to put into other things.

Someone suggested that the lack of hype is because famous actors charge different prices for voice acting depending on whether their names will be used to hype the product or not, and Deep Silver went for the "not' version.

I like a good voice acting because it adds to the atmosphere of a game and makes me get more into it.

However good voice acting doesn't need famous actors at all. I'm happy with the names for Risen because they are good actors and I'm sure they will make a good work. But I'm sure that other not so famous lower profile actors could do it just as good or even better. In fact I liked Gothic english voices and acting very much.

The famous voices are actually used mainly not for the quality of their perfoming but to hype the product. In Spain at least, lots of animation movies are hyped because of the famouse people dubbing it, and sometimes they are awful at it because they aren't even actors, while the traditional dubbing actors make a wonderful job.

So I like to know these actors will work on Risen, but as others said I would have rather seen the money spent on making a swiming and diving system. (By the way, just off topic climbing as in Gothic is confirmed?)

True, first tier acting isn't necessary to have a great game, but it can sure give the game more meaning and depth if they don't sacrifice quality somewhere else in the game.

Deep Silver is just seems like a HELL of a lot better publisher than PB's last. DS knows the PB team is a bunch of kick ass devs and if DS thinks they can pull off a AAA title by spending an extra 50 or 100 grand on voice, boost the production value and help get a million + seller, damn right they will do it, well I would. :)

Voice actors don't have to be famous, but there is a significant difference between good and bad ones in terms of immersion. One of my favourites is Rodger Bumpass (narrator in NWN2: MotB among other things), who is capable of completely sucking a player into the game by delivering such high performance acting.

Out of curiosity, how many of you here had a problem with the voice acting in Gothic 1-3?

G1/2 had great voice acting. G3 not so much.

And with regards to great voice acting. The Legacy of Kain series is top of the line. The BOs and the SRs have the best range of voice actors. Simon Templeman, Michael Bell and Tony Jay rule.

@topic: I'm kinda sad that DS doesn't hype their game for using the high-profile actors they are using. They could gain a lot if they did. They should do some video series/journals with the devs and the voice actors talking about their game. That kind of a video would be most beneficial if uploaded to gametrailers and sites of the same caliber.

I'm not sure it's as simple as that.

Building hype is quite the science, and you don't "hypnotise" the market simply by dropping names. First, you have to psychologically establish that your game is something really special, and THEN you can start adding reasons why - including famous actors.

They have people specialising in market manipulation, and how to carefully convince people that your product is the best thing ever - without them even having played it! It's really amazing how this is done.

Anyway, I don't see DS and PB being that focused in this way - but give them time :)

Eventually, they all fall prey to it - and if Risen is a big hit, I expect Risen 2 to be the first Gothic-style game to be unworthy of its legacy.

Rhianna Pratchett ???? talented ??? :p

Let us just say she was writing the story for one very recently released RPG game, but the story was so bad it was completely rejected and another person was hired.

I don't even know who this person is.
