The lead designer of Ultima 5: Lazarus and Mass Effect: Andromeda Ian Frazier asks this on the Ultima Dragons Facebook page:

Ok, one more question and then I promise I'll shut up for a while. :)

How much interest, if any, would you have in a remake of Ultima VII (both parts together as a single whole, with Forge of Virtue included but perhaps not Silver Seed), using the latest and greatest tech and significant overhauling of both combat and general usability? World sim features like day/night, weather, and NPC schedules would still exist but would be much more robust. New narrative content and polish added, but no significant deviation in the story itself.

Essentially I'm saying "Lazarus for U7, but with much higher production values."
More information.

I know I wanna it! NOW!

Sadly (or not) I don't have a Facebook account in order to answer there myself, but if someone cares to answer Mr Frazier on FB page, you can just add 'I know of a friend who also wants this!' :D

"higher production values" = gfx, button mashing, cutscenes, gay porn

I thinketh not.

Did you play Lazarus? Ian did the game and it is amazingly faithful to the original, especially considering they were stuck to the limitations of the Dungeon Siege engine.

I did. And I enjoyed the writing and design of locations and items. All very true to the Ultima spirit. What I didn't enjoy was the clumsy combat, but that's not what I'm worried about.

I'm very skeptical about them delivering simply a more polished version of Lazarus, and to me, higher production values in today's marketing speak doesn't imply that.

Speaking as someone who jumped on the Ultima train shortly after Akalabeth and rode it until it jumped off the rails at Ultima IX: No, I do not want this.

What I would like is a new game that captures what made Ultima VII so great, and gives me that same feeling of epic events in a real, magical alternate world. If you understand why Ultima VII was such a classic, use that understanding to make something original. And if you don't have that understanding, kindly refrain from strip mining the achievements of others in an attempt to cover up your own creative bankruptcy.

So it'd be EA designs game?
No.

But if it'll be outsourced to, dunno, Obsidian… Sure, why not.

I have never played this game, despite Ultima IV being the game that introduced me to RPGs, so I'd be very curious to give it a go.

Yup someone already mentioned that U7 has already been remade in Divinity Original Sin. The engine is there, USE IT. STOP WASTING TIME ROLLING YOUR OWN.

I am definitely interested. Ultima VII is among my top ten RPG.
It would be nice to have both parts together. But I would prefer Silver Seed to be included instead of Forge of Virtue, mostly because of the keyring and the Ring of Reagents.

As someone who was a small member of the Lazarus team, and who loves U7, I'm all for this!!

Only if it could seamlessly capture the "feel" of Ultima, which is the hardest part IMHO.

Well, if nothing else, this thread has me downloading Lazarus. :)

Why not? I think U7 is a great candidate for a remake as long as they don't take too many liberties. Give us an exact 1:1 copy (except for combat which is terrible in the original) in a modern graphics engine.

Put in some functional combat.. maybe RTwP, and I'll be throwing money at them. I've always wanted to play through U7, but it seems like I've been waiting forever for them to finish the Exult port.

This is very similar to my situation. Ultima IV was one of my first games (though I enjoyed Wizardry I before it) but I never got around to playing Ultima VII, I say with shame on my face. I guess at the time I only somewhat enjoyed Ultima V so I stopped playing Ultimas after that.

I enjoyed Ultima VI Lazarus a whole lot, and since Ultima VII seems to be very popular I would definitely like to give a remake a shot at least.

As long as it isn't an EA product, and wouldn't require the Origin platform, I'd consider it. Ultima seven was a great game, but if a remake has the intentions of putting in the crap that makes most games nowadays downright despicable and not worth playing, kindly just leave it alone.
