I decided to give Gothic 3 another try using the CP patch ( v1.73 now )

Despite a high-end rig: Phenom II x4 920, 4GB Ram, Geforce GTX 260, Win 7 pro 64bit; I've had all of the problems that people seem to have.

First and foremost I had the font bug, 1fps slideshow.
Fix: Replace Gothic3.ttf with any other font (arial works fine) renamed Gothic3.ttf

Then I had nearly-unplayable stuttering. It seems the stuttering comes from loading textures off the disk instead of storing them in memory.

Using the ini from http://forum.jowood.com/showthread.php?t=126976&page=25#363 removed most of the stuttering, it's playable now. This seems to be using about 3gb of ram so I'm hoping I can improve on this yet by increasing the memory cache sizes.

That ini author states it's conservative values derived from the German Board at
Bable Fish http://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/showthread.php?t=536804 I'm going to try that next see if that reduces the stuttering completely.

I'm just hoping my experiences can help someone who's still trying to play Gothic 3.

I tried these files and it runs great now, even better than before and the details are really cranked up. No stuttering at all while playing now, just a little extra texture caching on first load, then it's smooth.

I've read on the forums and my own experiences I seem to confirm it, the game actually runs better on newer hardware if you crank up the details because then more processing is pushed to the video card. I know, I know, doesn't make sense, why wouldn't the low settings be pushed to the card too? But it's true for me at least.

Your experience will certainly be helpful to quite a lot of people. Most infos on optimisation here are from 2006.
