Cyberpunk 2077 - New Gameplay @ PC Gamer

It's still my most anticipated game of this year, even if I still think the combat will disappoint me (although I should expect it, as I didn't like the combat of The Witcher and The Witcher 2. I didn't like the combat of the third game, but it became better with the added combat mode and that's what made me come back to the game and finish it).

In this game, it looks like the combat will be underwhelming for me, because I just don't enjoy this type of combat where enemies are bullet sponges that must be spammed with attacks until it triggers a death animation. But on the other hand, it seems that some original weapons and skills might spice it up a bit. And it looks like the quests are made so that it's viable and enjoyable other styles of gameplay, like stealth, for example.

To be clear, I know in RPGs enemies take time to go down, as every enemy has hit points and we do a certain damage, base on skills and weapon damage, etc. But the more dynamic and immersive you make the game, the more dynamic and immersive you expect the combat to be. Borderlands approach to combat, for me, is a turn off. I've tried to enjoy several RPGs, despite not enjoying the combat, only to end up stop playing a few hours in. I always make the mistake of thinking that story and other elements are what matters, but combat ends up being very important and make or break a game for me. Most RPGs rely too much on combat, for it to be ignored or just tolerated.

Another thing that toned down my expectations for this game is the driving. It just looks like you're driving a kart or something. But I'm only judging from the videos. This is minor, as a couple years ago I didn't even know we would be able to drive.

The Witcher 3 turned out an excelent game, after a few patches (and the alternative combat mode/controls). And I don't expect CDP to release an inferior game. So that's why I still have high expectations for this game and it will be a day one purchase for me.

I think he means "model". I liked the Witcher a lot mostly because of the writing, although combat sucked in general despite all the "RPG elements". It did help a lot that the game was based on best-selling books, of course.

It's really not about being a purist, it's just sickening how any kind of game gets slapped gear slots and stat growth and it gets automatically called a RPG. That's not what a RPG is, and sure Cyberpunk 2077 might still be a decent RPG as we don't know a lot of things about it, but it plays like a driver/shooter with "RPG elements".

To me, it's as I said earlier, if you slap gear slots and stat growth in a football game, it's still a football game, and I don't mind talking about it, because games like Red Dead Redemption or Half Life are excellent games without the need of being RPGs. But again, some of us come here to hear and talk about RPGs, not about driver/shooters or football games with gear slots and stat growth slapped into them.

I'm also not saying you can't talk about it or hype it, that's neither my place or responsibility. There's just three million sites to talk and hype Cyberpunk2077 and not that many to talk and hype about proper RPGs, and if the more niche sites also fall into the mainstream, that'll be a bad day for RPG fans. But again, not my call, I just go where I think it's worth my time, and posts about Cyberpunk surely will get a ton more hits than "Trails of Cold Steel", so there is that.

I appreciate this post and the spirit in which it was written, first and foremost. We may disagree, but I respect your perspective.

There are a lot of games that have RPG elements these days, and we'd probably end up agreeing that a lot of them still aren't RPGs. A football game with a career mode and stat increases is still a sports game, not an RPG. Recent Assassin's Creed games aren't, to me, RPGs, despite the presence of perks and leveling loot.

It's always very hard to put one's finger on what exactly makes a game an RPG (and even harder to get two people to agree on that definition), but to me it boils down to what is at the core of the experience. What the purpose of that game is. Everything else is window dressing and delivery system.

It doesn't matter that you drive around in Cyberpunk, anymore than it mattered that you rode horses in The Witcher 3. It doesn't matter that you shoot guns anymore than it matters that you swing swords in Skyrim. What matters, to me, is that the game is about story and personal choices, and everything I've heard and seen and read and everything that CDPR is about predisposes me to believe that's what we'll get here, with Cyberpunk 2077.

The writing was a big draw for me with the Witcher 3 also (and any RPG, really), and I don't know enough about the writing in CP yet to judge it one way or the other. I am prepared for the overall tone to be very different from that of a fantasy game.

Frankly it's the reason I come to this site daily and support it financially but rarely post - there are too many that simply complain and throw tantrums b/c somehow they seem to feel it makes them 'purist' (??? I guess ????).

Less complaining, more posting!

People that glorify a game before release are just as crazy as those that vilify it. Both are opinions and both are valid as opinions.

Example :
Fluent loves everything before release (and mostly everything after too).
Mercy hates everything before release (and mostly everything after too).

Both are right, and both are wrong

After some posts here I'm actually a bit more positive. I didn't think of the driving! I enjoyed the driving in GTA V with a mod making in more realistic and using a steering wheel. Maybe I will here as well :)

And if the game is varied I'll probably find some parts annoying and some good.

I never pre-order anyway, so I'll just do as I usually do: wait and see.

"Fucking RPG elements" are there in the form of skills, perks, attributes, progression therein, multiple life paths, multiple ways to go through quests, people to talk to, modifications to equipment, a non-linear world to explore…
The problem is that they don't show that.
I have now idea how their presentation of this game and it being claimed to be an RPG do work together.
Most elements they show could be part of any random action oriented game.

But the good thing is that I have no expectations of this game, so I can only be positively surprised.

I suspect that the reviewer picked the footage he wanted to show and picked elements that looked at the surface a lot like GTA. But I have seen some other previews where the game looks like a much more immersive RPG. So what we could have here is a video showing his own bias not necessarily what the gameplay will be like overall.

True enough.

As true as the fact that those gameplay videos feel like the players walk on rails, probably because of gamepad controllers.

But personally, I'm still pretty excited about it. If this turns out to be a first-class story-heavy action shooter with RPG elements I'm fine with that. ;)

I would play a hundred more GTA games before I played another 10 hours of those interminable Trails of Cold Steel games you love so much. Too each his own.

Hmm. Never played Trails of Cold Steel. Checked on it now and put it on soon-to-play list. Thanks for bringing it to my attention .

Still optimistic about this!

Never been a "GTA-fan", in fact gta4 is the only game in the series that I played to the end. On the other hand, I did enjoy "Mafia" 1&2 as well as "Sleeping Dogs", so I'm not adverse to a bit of "driving around the landscape".

Basically, I have high hopes that this game will be a good sci-fi game with vibes similar to "Deus Ex", combined with a little bit of gta-style gameplay, combined with gameplay that is reminiscent of the Witcher series. In other words, a really interesting mix. ;)

One of the many articles about playing the game as a GTA clone.

“GTA mode” is possible in Cyberpunk 2077 - PCGamesN
When the Cyberpunk 2077 release date rolls around later this year, you’ll be able to steal cars and stir up some chaos in the RPG game’s bustling Night City. And, developer CD Projekt Red previously confirmed there’ll be no morality system in Cyberpunk 2077 as such, so you won’t need to worry about too many questionable decisions stacking up against you. However, while the game will let you tear around and cause some carnage, the dev’s pretty sure players won’t be tempted to stick with “GTA mode” for too long.

The whole series is recommended, but the Trails of Cold Steel series is the best. The final part will be released on the PC next year hopefully. Expect more after that.

Actually I find eurogamer's article better when it comes about GTAing:
https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/...rpunk-2077-for-four-hours-heres-what-we-think
Then there's the car, which you're given early on. You don't need to remember where you parked it because you can call it to you, like Roach in The Witcher 3. Press the d-pad and the car magically appears, like Kit from Knight Rider. Driving, though, feels a little bland. The car looks nice, with a pointy front and winged doors, and pumps little jets of fire from the exhaust pipes when you go up a gear, but it - I don't know - lacks detail. It feels a bit thin, a bit lacking in substance. Bombing around doesn't have quite the same thrill as in a game like GTA.
Some said gameplay vids look as if mushrooms were used and this article confirms that.
Now I had no thrills in GTA 5, the game was boring to me, thuus I guess based on the article, driving in CP will be even more boring. However:
I meet Jackie while trying to steal a car because he wants to steal it too, then the cops turn up and things start to go wrong. Pretty soon, he's driving while I'm leaning out of the window shooting and we're firm friends.
If I get someone else to taxi/uber me around, count me in!

btw, I love that article as it does more on me than any stuipid video could. Here's an example:
I get a chance to just be in the world and feel what it's like to be there. I nose around, talking to people. I look through my inventory and pore over my character development screens, fantasising about the kind of Cyberpunk hero I'll be.
Marked what I want from every custom character RPG. If it can't turn on my imagination, get off my property.

Have to make a separate post about this.
Where do I preorder (again)? :D

TBH I don't care much about such feature, but it does open up unorthodox modding possibilities (pubic dreadlocks ;)) instead of making modders to waste days and weeks on creating boobs and dicks that never turn out good enough.
The more content never seen elsewhere, the marrier. :D

I'm very afaid of what videos will be released because of these so called customization features. Not counting the game has many adult situations like the Witcher games.:sweatdrop:

Speaking of customisation, apparently you can make females with a penis and even decide its size. Now I'm happy with giving all kinds of options to everyone, and I'm pretty sure in our actual future that kind of thing will be pretty common, but this game is going to be such a bait for porn sites that I don't even want to begin to fathom it.

IMO that's nothing negative. People are enjoying digital dolls porn, noone is harmed, noone caught any disease, everyone gets paid, etc.

The thing is these chimeric combos will make the game banned in cave age countries causing a piracy surge which is bad for business. On the other hand someone eventually had to risk it so a high profile game might trigger a change against censorship unlike obscure indie stuff.

Well, I hardly care about the game now as this whole thread has been more entertaining than I even expected the game to be!

Am I the only that is not impressed? It looks like a typical cyberpunk open world FPS…Where are the fucking RPG elements, Where are the massive dialogue trees? Is this game gonna be a "cinematic" FPS? Where's the overall "RPG" gameplay and feeling? Even the graphics look "typical", just ok but nothing extraordinary as many people like to believe. It's definitely a no buy day 1 for me. I'll wait to see how this goes and if it's worth it then I'll buy it, I'm not a blind sheep.

Precisely. The best part was the Rage 1-like desert driving and race. I have a bad feeling this game will flop. The engine appears to be struggling and the lighting somehow is not top-notch. I have hopes the 3D-porn makers will peruse the female models + body-physics capabilities in this engine and create works on Patreon. :D
