Default Arcengine: Eye of the Beholder recreation

April 22nd, 2009, 15:55
Looks like someone named Iliak is trying to recreate Eye of the Beholder using a home-brew engine using the original art assets.

If he doesn't get bored and quit, or sued by whoever owns the IP, maybe we'll have a second way to play the game besides dosbox.

Don't think they can sue him if he doesn't sell it.

If it is exactly the same game then I don't really see the point. It would be easier just to use dosbox.

Obviously the first step should be to recreate what's there already. However, a new engine could allow extra content to be generated, or for some textures/models/interface elements to be replaced at will (with, say, better looking graphics).

In any case, the engine (ArcEngine) seems to be dedicated to more than just a remake of Eye of the Beholder, so we could get something new and cool from it. Not exactly the most likely of occurrences, but still.

Not sued, but they could issue a cease & desist or whatever they call it. Just because you're giving it away doesn't mean you can get an engine and build Fallout 3 on it, using Fallout 3's art and music.

Oh yeah, I remember reading about a fan made Space Quest 7 getting axed for about the same reason. http://sq7.org/status.php

Sucked too because it looked good. What they should do is move to a country where they don't give care how many cease and desist orders are invoked. Say Taiwan or Sweden

Maybe, and this is a big Maybe, Taiwan might actually care if someone brided the right people, but Sweden now there is a place to make whatever you want and say STFU to American Corps. who don't do anything with the license anyways.

Isn't the Pirate Bay in Sweden? They were just found guilty on assisting piracy a few days ago

You could play one of the NWN community mod remakes.

I liked this one.

Because they made money from it. And because it was made in such huge scale with so many licenses, and it was modern stuff that was being pirated. I doubt anyone would care if someone remade Eye of the Beholder and released it as free ware. Well, apart from the "well done, I'll play it" part…

Besides, Pirate Bay is appealing, so that trial is far from over by the way. There's at least one more trial before they're found guilty.

Why remake it when there's an excellent EotB mod for NWN? It uses the same basic game maps as the original, and there was never really much of a plot!!

Interesting pet project - but it works perfectly in DOSBOX.

Maybe they're preparing the engine for other games - but if so, i'd suggest working on art assets instead of converting EotB.

Wow I love this forum. EOTB : Darkmoon was one the first RPG's I fell in love with. I don't think I have the stomach to play it in dosBox though… this is great news, I hope he succeeds

Is EOTB = Darkmoon, or were there several EotB's?

It's a Trilogy = 3 games.
