Default 4chan strikes again…

June 9th, 2009, 08:56
The good folks at 4chan did a pretty huge precision hack of the Time Man Of The Year poll. Not only did they make moot, the founder of 4chan, the overwhelming winner -- they made the initials of the top 21 spell "marblecake also the game."

Poll here:

Explanation here:

I know this is evil and wrong, but I can't help admiring these guys. The Internet would be duller without them around. I'm glad there aren't much more of them, though…

I'm always amazed seeing them pull off something like this when I know what mindless, immature messages usually occupies /b/ and its likes.

Hmph! This isn't as bad as the whole Scientology war thing, but I liked it better when there weren't so many people trying to make it into a "community" or something. There was a time when you could get whatever you wanted, be it porn, art, music, info, without a million requests for "SAUCE PLZ LOL" and having to see the same shit over and over again with the message "HAI WUT IZ DIS FRM GUIZES?"

I'm old.

Wow, that Message to Scientology is actually pretty creepy. I was kinda reminded of Deus Ex 2's "Helios has spoken", heh

Hm, the few times I followed a link to 4chan I was informed that I am banned, for whatever reasons.

So, what is Time going to do now?

Ignore it, I expect. As their write-up said, "it's an Internet poll; being suspicious of them comes with the territory."

Thoth, why was their taking on Scientology thing bad? It made the Internet Hate Machine do something useful for once, even if it seems it was largely without effect.

Because, "anonymous" was never about doing something useful. It's suppose to be self serving. Some of the chanology stuff was funny, but it was made up of kids who thought they were doing the right thing or something. Lulz, is of course, the right thing and the only thing that matters. You don't set out to do something useful, you set out to make something funny. If that means turning in a pedophile to the police then so be it. If it means emailing some guy pics of his dead daughter who died speeding, well then there ya go. So now you have these white knights that try to change shit around and make moral codes or something. Nah!

Okay in that way I agree, if doing stuff for the lulz isn't the standard anymore it loses much of its "charm". I still like it as a one-off thing though.

Because that "bunch of anime lover" is hundreds or thousands of different people - from skilled hackers to "casual" computer users, with really different skills, views etc. They are mostly unharmful. Mostly And they do anything "for the lulz", 7chan was even on american TV (something about terrorism, lulz).
