Thread aka naming gone bad…
Hello summer people!

I was reading some lore from a game by Bioware aaand.. I got annoyed. So I thought I'd share it with you.
Lets introduce some geography names from the Ragon Age universe:

*Nations (all):

FeRelden
TevinteR
ORlais
Rivain
AndeRfels
FRee MaRches
SeheRon
NevaRRa
Antiva

Spot the odd one out!

*Now some geographical names (in FeRelden):

All revealed cities in FeRelden:

DeneRim
LotheRing
South Reach
AmaRanthine
GwaRen
HigheverR
ORzammaR
Redcliffe
West Hill (castle and not a city?)

*Capitals on the continent:

Val Royeaux, HossbeRg, MinRathous, DaiRsmuid, SeheRon, NevaRRa, Antiva City (spot the odd one out)

*Other geographical names (in FeRelden):

BRecilian Forest, KoRcari Wilds, FRostback Mountains, HafteR River, SouthRon Hills, DRakon River, The HinteRlands, The BannoRn, DRagon's Peak, GheRlen's Pass, Lake Calenhad, River Dane (ok, here you can spot 2 - two - odd ones out!)

*Outside of Ferelden (revealed so far):

BoeRic ocean, AmaRanthine Ocean, HunteRhoRn mountains, DonaRks, GamoRdan Peaks, PaR Vollen, Kont-AR (or is it ARR?)

Ferelden map: http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/dr…lden_Map_1.jpg

Oh, and the continent is called Thedas - only because the fanboys at the bioware boards used this acronym to describe THE DA S-etting all these years; so the writers kept that name. If it wasn't for the fanboys the continet would be called RERELDER or something.

This is without mentioning the names of the imporant characters in the DA universe.. that would be fun.

Anyway, I don't know about you, but reading this with all these Rs popping out really bothered me. Some phonetic variety, please? It's like they gave a child the task to name places and characters in DA. "Wow, this sounds dark and mature, I'll add another R!"
R is a specific letter, yes, adds a certain dose of fantasy to the name if you will - but having 90% of the names containing an "r"? It's a bit too too much, I think. Conventionally, the eaiest way to form a "fantasy" name is to include an R. Try it yourself…

***

Now about the secret(s):

*The 10th potential party member is Loghain (Mac TiR ).

*There will be 4 romanceable party members:
Alistair, Zevran, Leliana and Morrigan. All written by David Gaider, although I'm not sure if he has written Leliana.

Bioware has probably included a gay and lesbian romance (i.e. a person who switches sexual orientations depending on who you play). So.. I can't wait to discover if bioware is cliche enough to have made Zevran (the blonde Britney-like elf) the gay romance. Alistair being the virile templar..

*Class specialisations:
Assassin, Champion, Berseker, Reaver, Ranger, Duelist, Arcane Warrior, Templar, Shapeshifter, Bloodmage, Bard, Spirit Healer.

*That's all.

R is a powerful consonant. I think it's also very frequent in plenty LOTR names.

Romances are so retarded in games. They're either

1. You're in some shithole dungeon, your life is on the line, then suddenly dialogue shoots up and you have to hear about whether adventurers can start a family or some bullshit.

2. You give shit to someone and they have sex with you.

Oh yeah, on topic: Rupert the Rapacious Ravager

'r' doesn't sound sharp in english for me. Anyway whore engrish doesn't sound sharp at arr. They shourd use another european accent or something - russian, porish, german, finnish - nearry any -except french - have better 'r' than engrish!

I think with this much stretching the OP should feel extremely limber by now.

Stretching what, dear Gaider?

I have listed all the nations in Thedas, all the capitals in Thedas and almost all (revealed) geographic places in Ferelden. Can you prove you have actually done better than throwing an R in 90% of the names in your game?

The only stretch I see here is your failed attempt at sarcasm, which only works amongst your fangirls and fanboys in that fantastic wonderland called the bioboards. Here, nobody will be impressed.

Omigod! It's a conspiracy of lame!

The names came about through various means, and if you think there's not enough variety then so be it. The "stretch" here is that you seem to be able to see some sinister pattern throughout it all. But whatever. If it makes you feel clever, then by all means carry on. Doesn't sound like someone has an axe to grind at all, no sir.

Oh no! "Grind" has an 'r', too! Curse my limited vocabulary! Ahhh! 'StRetch!' 'SinisteR!' 'CuRse!' 'VocabulaRy!' Ahhh!

I must say I rather like 'R's. I try to put at least one in most of my characters' names. Does this make me a freak?

In fact,

NevaRRa
one of my chars was called Nevara.

I don't know, 'r' just makes them sound so ruggedly rrrrraaaw. j/k

Uh yeah… lots of R's there.

Nice one hawkeye, youve made what amounts to the most ridiculous criticism Ive ever seen, of any game or it's lore. Please reassure me that youre not indeed serious.

The vowels! The vowels! There are vowels all over the place in those names. We didn't need no stinkin vowels in Morrowind, so this is clearly a sign of the agonizing death of creativity at Bioware. Mark it down. Dead, I tell you, dead.

Omigod! Seems DA is lamer, after all!

And don't you live in Edmonton, Canada?

If it makes you feel clever, then by all means carry on. Doesn't sound like someone has an axe to grind at all, no sir.
Ohh, Gaider employing his favourite tactic from the bioboards - if anyone questions his little baby called Ragon Age - lets try to dismiss it by pulling the "need to feel clever" card out.
No, sorry to burst your bubble, my intention was solely to point out a pattern in naming I found ridiculous. And it seems it touched a weak spot of yours. Now feel free to reply something witty after an hour of cogitation.

Something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNGy4z4AaN0
Well, at least your hair has magically regrown.

Oh, who do we have here..

Are you the same xsamhainx that registered in 2002. on the bioboards and posted this:
"You know, for being a newer game, its still pretty high up on the list. read the reader comments, and most are pretty high. "Evil"whinerfromthewest, go play a diffrent game already you miscreant"
http://nwn.bioware.com/forums/viewto…8&topic=132762
As a reply to a topic of a person who complained about the square graphics of NWN?

Yes, it seems you're the same person.
Now you can cover yourself with those big ears of yours and go hide under a rock.

And for the record - yes, naming and the sound of names is extremely imortant for a fantasy world that is trying to establish itself.

Great logic.. comparing vowels with consonants.

Grt lgc, dtwnr.

Well, maybe R is indeed a vowel in the DA universe. That would explain why there are more Rs than As in it.

You can't see the forest for the trees, mister. Lots of R's??? Pishposh. The real crisis is the epidemic --epidemic, I tell you-- of vowels. Region/City names in Morrowind had, on average, 600 consonants and 2 vowels and that game won all sorts of awards. Not to mention the apostrophes! Where are the damn apostrophes in DA? Dragon Age will fail. *Fail*, I say!

Heavy use of R always seemed an 'elven' thing to me but would need an elven alphabet breakdown of both vowels and consonants usage in other (non-Bioware) games to draw a realistic comparison maybe.
