Angst: Rahz's Revenge seems to have been published by a company that on top of Angst only released 2 unofficial levelpacks (C&C and Warcraft II), and ceased to be after Angst was released. Tewi Verlag GMBH.
Until 2009, gamerankings have listed the worst First-Person Shooter ever made, as "Navy SEALs: Weapons of Mass Destruction", that was actually released by the same publisher as Legend: Hand of God, Valusoft Inc, a division of THQ.
Gamespots video review is hillarious, as is their written review that begins with; Some features apparently were cut from Navy SEALs: Weapons of Mass Destruction. In alphabetical order, these are: gameplay, graphics, and sound.
Appearently though, the 2009 game "Utopia City" is currently rated worse.

I would recommend Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena or Max payne 1 & 2. They all have great stories and have nothing to do with ww2 etc.

Realms of the Haunting, even though it's old. *It* was the peak.
As for slightly newer shooters-with-a-story: Undying.
And I second the AvP 2 and Riddick proposals.

On the upside, I liked Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood. Fun campaign, with a pretty well-told story (for the genre).

Another really good story based FPS was XIII.
It had a really well made conspiracy theory like story. And the presentation using comic style with cell shading was very original (iis cutscenes were as athmospheric as those of Max Payne IMHO).

Nothing to see here.

Sadly NOLF 2 did not sell good enough, and to remedy that they released contract jack, which pretty much killed what is probably one of the best FPS series ever….

I finally bought NOLF 1&2 just a few months ago, but haven't had time to play them yet.

Of course, there is always Stubbs the Zombie!

It's more first person brawler with some shooting, but there is Zeno Clash which has a nice little story and unique world/characters. I hope they make an rpg set in that world at some point.

Cybermage was brilliant. The only thing that was not so brilliant: the CTD crashes caused by touching the ground in certain places. I thought I would go mad when I ran into the same error time and time again… until I discovered there was another way to this quest-critical place. The CTDs lost some of their shock factor after I acquired the jet pack because I could always fly over CTD-causing terrain.
Ah, thinking of CTDs in quest-critical situations: SiN was another nicely-executed shooter. It even worked flawlessly after the first patch.

Yet another game that I haven't had time to play yet. I purchased a brand new copy of SiN, as well as the 'Wages of sin' expansion, last year on Ebay.

I did a retrospective for that last year for GamerDad, going to redo it for my upcoming Netbook Gamer series …

If you want total immersion and a great story, you can't go wrong with either System Shock 2 (don't need to play the original, but I recommend using windows 98 and surround sound) or Call of the Cthulu (surround sound). Arx Fatalis is also another great fps rpg.
