lock pick : how ?

do i have to click on the lockpicks in my inventory, activate them in any way, move them to my sword hotkey (ie, hotkey 1) ? i'm at level 2 lock picking, i was unable to unlock a 4 keyhole or 6 keyhole chest; i snuck in to lorenzo's/ricardos's hut in the bandit camp ; thanks

Hm, if you´ve level 2 lockpicking, you should be able to unlock those 4 or 6 keyhole chests.
You need to have a lockpick in your inventory, click on a chest and then play the lockpicking minigame via left and right movement keys (a and d by default).

I had no idea at first, since the game doesn't actually seem to tell you. But you use the 'A' and 'D' keys (left and right) … which I actually had to go back to the PDF manual to see.

u need to be in chapter 2 before u can train lockpick to level 3

Well i'm in chapter 2 - Inquisitor's Plan and i was told that only Patty can teach you lvl 3.
