Stuck in a Temple (3rd Winch)
October 14th, 2009, 00:40
I am in the westernmost temple, the one Patty escorts you to. There are 3 winches needed to get through this gate. I found 2 of them no problem. In the one you access from the tunnel that leads to the drawbridge there is a door immediately on your left that needs to crossed to get to the final winch according to the map. This one has me stuck, I can't find any way to open the door. Can anybody help me out?

To lower the drawbridge, you have to enter one of the others (not the one with the spikes in the beginning, the other one). Run into it, turn left and run up some stairs to an open area - here you can look down at the drawbridge. Shoot an arrow with either a bow or crossbow down at the wheel that will drop the drawbridge.
If you need a more specific explaination, just ask.

There are a few topics on the western waterfall temple and all those winches in the room with the map column in it. So I made a quicky spoiler video showing all the winches getting… err… winched. I point out a couple of secrets along the way, too, just for good measure.

This one was a real pain. I can understand a bow/crossbow being used to hit a switch, but to turn a winch? Rather non-intuitive, to say the least. I never would have figured that out without help from forums.

Yeah, that was a bit strange - though I suspected something when they plopped an old crossbow right in front of me in the first winch's hallway. Hmmm… suddenly I'm supposed to have a ranged weapon… hmmmm….
What got me was the switch. I hadn't seen any tri-state switches before in Risen. I pressed the switch once, the door to the lava room opened, and I spent a ton of time trying to figure out how to get that drawbridge down from that room. It never occured to me that I could press the switch again and have a third door open up, so I had to hit the forum.

This was a monster maze. I admit that I also peeked on the forum..
Kudos to the pioneers who had to figure this one out by themselves.. - must have had quite a headache afterwards…

I got stuck on this last night too and read the post. Sad thing is that I saw the winch at thought for a brief moment about firing an arrow at it but thought "nah that's ridiculous". I spent plenty of arrows shooting at the crystals though.
There is a bug you can exploit however, if you shoot one of the undead ash beasts so he charges the gate and then attack him melee, by pressing forward you'll pass through the gate.
