It's kind of a pity. Germany has some really wonderful voice actors, but almost all of them are aged 70+ by now, many are already dead. There were great voices among them, but alas the new generation has little remarkable voices. Peter Groeger who speaks Forgrimm for instance has spoken prolly 100s of characters, Dr. Watson and Quark from DS9 among them.

I dare to disagree. There is no country AFAIK that has taken the voice over "art" to such perfection as Germany. There are still a lot of talented voice actors (some are even in DraSa) and my most respected voice actor had his share of game work done (e. g. Two Worlds): Dietmar Wunder *1965
http://www.synchronkartei.de/index.p…=talker&id=775
Also Andreas Fröhlich *1965

Listen to them at http://www.voice4u.de/02.swf (Flash site, though)

That may be right for certain media (Hörspiele etc). German dubs/localizations are often complete crap. Whenever it's casting of 'Speakers', voice actors with a range of exactly one voice, e.g. Marie-Jane Watson (1994 Spiderman cartoon) and Bart Simpson (The Simpsons) have the same voice, or Steve Urkel (Family Matters) and Vegeta (Dragonball Z, later recast). And if you ever been unfortunate enough to play the original German Baldur's Gate you know that in one point in time AAA English-to-German video game translators were not required to understand English.

On a small Star Wars convention some time (a few years ?) before the turn of the Millennium, Darth Vader actor David Prowse and his "German voice" for the movies Hans Petruo actually met. David Prowse got a signing from him.

Only a few years later, Mr. Petruo died.

I was on that convention, saw both, but didn't happen to see the actual signing. However, I believe it's very, very likely to be true, since they were all in a very good mood there.

As I learned of this, I instantly thought that this was a sign of deep appreciation of the work of a voice actor, that Mr. Prowse got a sign from Mr. Petruo.

This kind of taught me a lesson.

About Mr. Petruo there exists only a German-language Wikipedia page :
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heinz_Petruo

Sir Christopher Lee is known to be able to speak German, too; in fact he voice-acted the role of King Haggard of The Last Unicorn in German language. He voice-acted this character in the English-language version of the movie, too.
