Several years ago, I played a game
February 13th, 2010, 00:41
Or atleast the demo for it. I am going to describe what i can remember here in as much detail as I can in the hopes that someone will recognize the game and identify it so I can play it again.
It was over 6 years ago, it was a space simulator, you have a ship and go flying around. The intro video for the demo shows the game characters on a space station sabotaging it before blasting off and leaving (i think, fairly confident)
It had a fairly open story, you could choose where you wanted to go, as well as a warp system to get from, well, system to system. I think you have one ship throughout the game that you upgrade (or at least i assume you can upgrade it)
You cant stop on a dime, its more like mechwarrior where you accelerate and decelerate. There is combat, I just cant remember any details from it.
If anyone recognizes this game, or thinks they recognize it, please tell me. Ive gone through gamespots site looking at the 'games you may like…' till my eyes bled, and I'm wanting to play it more and more

I only know Freelancer, which was released in 2003. Very good game. There's a long intro on youtube. But it didn't utilize Newtonian Physics, if that's what you mean by "can't stop on a dime", so you might be thinking of another game.
Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos from 2001 is one I researched a couple of days ago, which features such acceleration physics, but I have never played it. Watch the intro.
Otherwise I can't really help you. There's a very long list of space sims on Wikipedia, if you are desperate.

My first thought was Freelancer, but after a bit more of a memory check, this sounds a lot like the intro to X2: The Threat. Here's that intro.

I was thinking of X2 when I read the description.
And then i read the suggestion of freelancer. Now i want to replay freelancer.

If Freelancer had been with Joystick support - okay.
But I totally loathe that mouse-only movement.
There I decoided not to play flight simulators with mouse only. It just feels … wrong to me. X-Wing, Airbus, Boing driven with mouse ???

That's pretty amazing, to remember a demo from 6 years ago and want to play the game, after all that time… Must've really made an impression.

Well, to me it does.
To me, there is an "up" and "down", at least in correlation to the starships there.

I love you all!
Turns out it was Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos. What tripped me up was that the demo (off of FilePlanet) has a different intro video than the one shown on youtube, it looks like its set a little after the game starts.
Thank you all for your help! I'm quite glad I can try this game again.

Nice coincidence, then. Keep us updated. I'm curious regarding the controls — unlike Alrik I love mouse controls in space sims, Freelancer spoiled me. That, and I don't know where I left my (very) old Wingman Extreme
. I assume IW2 is only for Joysticks?
