The game have scored some pretty bad reviews. My arachnophobia stops me from playing it anyway.

Okey, played like ten hours of multiplayer now with friends and it's been alot of fun except for a few minor things that I hope they fix. Best part was the species teamdeathmatch mode, it's just a blast to team up with your friends and coordinate the shit out of any opposition. The infestation and predatorhunt modes along with the marine survival-swarm mode were pretty fun aswell but just as a sidedistraction imo. Team deathmatch is where it's at! I also like the melee system for both the alien and the predator, not as much for the marine. I find it somewhat unlikely that a marine should be able to knock down a live alien or predator with such ease.
Anouther annoying thing is the fact that you can't choose which race to play in teamdeathmatch, your team automatically gets assigned to a species. I guess they made the game that way so no species should be too dominant or lack there of. This mindset is just wrong, it just feels like they don't trust their own ability to create equally interesting species.
Then there is the fact that anyone can be chosen to be the host-server so if you're unlucky you might end up with a russian host at 1000 ms delay. Oh, and joining games takes abit too much time aswell.
But aside from these things it's a damn fun game! All three races feel powerful, some more powerful then others on certain maps which I think is fine. Nothing feels better then making a marine notice you on the radar infront of him and then rush all over the map to get behind him withouth him realizing and then plant your tongue in the back of his head.

Still haven't picked this up yet. Has anyone played through the single-player campaigns yet? I keep hearing positive reviews about the multi-player, but I have very little interest in playing it online.

The single player campaigns are decent, but they recycle alot of maps in between each campaign. If you've played AvP2 you should have some idea what I'm talking about, but this time it is done a lot more.
Marine campaign feels exactly like AvP2, which is good in my opinion. The Alien AI behaves a lot more realistic this time arround and can be really tricky at times. The predator campaign is the easiest of all 3 (also like AvP1 & 2), I would even call it too easy if you ask me. The main reason for this is the marine AI, which is day and night differant compaired to the Alien AI. Lastly, the alien campaign is also similar to AvP2 and for some reason I thought this one was the best of the 3 (and the shortest).
In short : If you liked the AvP2 SP campaign, I think you'll like this one. Overall though, the AvP2 SP campaign is still a tad better, but not by much.
Hope this helps.

That is the most positive review of the new AvP I've seen … but sadly I found it inferior to the originals in every way. If I had to pay (rather than getting a 'bonus' review copy) I would be really annoyed …
