Blizzard Accts under Attack
June 4th, 2010, 15:35
Just a heads up for anyone who ever had a Blizzard.net game acct. such as for WoW. Seems to be a major phishing scam going on against closed and abandoned accts now. Emails will come telling you your acct. is being used illegally, or been involved in stealing, ect…any of the old scams that were out including you have won something….just ignore and delete. If you are currently using a Blizzard acct for game play you can check the forums and read all the hints for sorting real emails, but if like me, your acct was closed, you are safe and can delete any emails.
If I want Blizzard info I know where to find it and don't need to read emails.

Thanks for the headsup, CM. I've gotten two such emails, I have to assume for the account I've used to get updates to Diablo II through battlenet, since I've never actually played any of their games online. I've ignored and deleted them, as I didn't figure Blizzard was that interested in talking to me when I haven't used that account in years. I've also been getting a weird one from "wemaster@gametunnel.com" which I figure is bogus, since if you're really a webmaster, you ought to be able to spell it.

Their forums have a dedicated thread just for these phishing hack attempts if anyone really wants to get details. I hate the people who do this crap. Sad thing is the kids out there who they manage to get to fall for their crap.

Same. Even got hacked a while back, lost my account, but Blizzard restored it fast (very good work). Now I have an authenticator to avoid the same happening again.

Hmmm… (check's today's spam)
I've won the lottery four times. I can get viagra for anywhere from 70 to 89% off… ooops, there's one for 05% off… idiot spam programmers. Mrs. Judith is about to die and wants to give all her money to the needy but seems to think she needs my help to do that. No Blizzard email, though. Given the mass of spam I get a day, that probably means they are not just sending out emails blind. They got the email addresses of everyone on Blizzard.net somehow.
So how did they do that?

I doubt they have that to be honest. Among other things, I've seen Aion spam mails despite never having played it.

Yep, I've got a couple. The phishing return address had an obvious typo in it. Yahoo mail is amazingly accurate at filtering this junk and depositing it into the "bulK' (i.e. "spam") folder.

I get 4-5 attempts per day, and on more than one e-mail account. It's funny, I got so many, it made we want to reactivate my account … which I did for about 3 months, then canceled it again. The phishing attempts never let up.
I suspect they get the e-mail addresses from gaming forums, since many of the ones I got were on my gaming character e-mail, and I don't use that one to actually sign up for MMO's.

Funny enough I get repeated emails every day as well… and never have had a Blizzard account of any kind (and never will). So it's likely just a bot or six scouring gaming-related forums and picking up addresses at random.
