Much better than my original playthrough in 2008. In fact, I can't think of any other time where I've enjoyed a replay so much more than the original experience.

The mods I chose definitely make a huge difference though. I played it 100% vanilla the first time, and lost interest less than half-way through the game. I'm pretty sure I'll be finishing it this time, even if I'm in no hurry to do so.

Btw: These are the mods I'm using. I also have all DLC installed.

RH_Iron Sights - A mod that adds true 'down the sight' aiming. Makes combat a lot more realistic and enjoyable for me. I couldn't imagine ever playing FO3 without it now. Many thanks to skavenhorde for pointing it out to me.

DarNified UI - Makes fonts a lot smaller, and allows you to customize certain aspects of the HUD and menus.

Arwen's Reduced XP - Self explanatory.

Delay DLC - Described above in post #5.

Bobble NoBoost - Removes stat bonuses from finding Bobbleheads.

Achievement Remover - Removes all achievements from the game. I found them to be annoying and immersion breaking.

Karma Revamp - Overhauls the karma bonuses and reductions, so your karma doesn't fluctuate so drastically. It was way too easy to become good/evil in the vanilla game imo.

I also did some further editing with the UI mod. My compass doesn't show quest markers, landmarks, or NPCs. Also, I don't get a message telling me if I'm "hidden" while sneaking.

Finally, I changed the timescale to make it more realistic. In the vanilla game, an entire day/night cycle lasted only 48 minutes, which I thought was completely ridiculous. I'm using a setting that makes the day/night cycle last 3 hours.

The bobble head one sounds like another good one. I make a point of not picking those up because of the stupid boosts you get. For one thing the game is already too easy and for another… how does a bobble head increase your stats or skills? Totally stupid.

And that reminds me, clothing also does that, so I'd find one that removes skill and stat boosts from clothing (with the exception of where it makes sense like power armour gives you a strength boosts and stuff like that). My favorite hat is the Chinese Commando Hat, but I hate that it gives me a Perception boost.

I'm glad you're enjoying it. You'll be able to ease right on into New Vegas. I envy you.

For me, they represent one of the few elements that make exploration in F3 rewarding. Even without the boost, collecting those was fun. That said, F3 ain't F2. The S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system in F3 is underutilized anyway. All characters no matter what you begin with, eventually end up the same.

The tiny boosts you get is perhaps the only reason to pick one item over another besides looks. Removing that also removes one of the few elements that sets items apart in a game that already suffers from lack of inventory diversity.

The boosts might not make sense all the time, but like so many other issues in F3, that is the result of core design and without a complete overhaul it's easier to accept the games flaws, complete the game and move on.

Had I been in charge over the item system in F3, the first I would have done would be to add a greater variety of item effects, inspired by the real world. Ballistics, accuracy, penetration, custom sights, melee damage (for firearms), fire rate, ammo size, weight, encumbrance, critical chance, area impact etc. etc. A game in which "guns" play a such great importance, having only "damage", "weight" and "ammo size" as stats is seriously underutilizing the games potential (yeah, I know that some weapons have fire effects, but they could have done A LOT more). Now imagine if decay could have had an impact on <b>all</b> of those values, so a guns accuracy, the ability to equip it with a sight etc would get worse without repair/cleaning?

The same reasoning goes for armor. The variety of armor stats could have been increased a lot, based on real world counterparts. For what reason do you pick one set of clothes over another? Clothes can be used to blend into social situations, to carry more weight, to ease restrictions, to protect against hazards etc etc. That said, armor is quite meaningless anyway. I personally played much of the game with regular clothing.

If I could make a suggestion next time around….or even this time around because it is worth it to use this mod. I would say at the very least use FWE - F03 Wanderers Edition

It is the single best mod for FO3. Click the spoiler for the list of changes it makes (most of these changes are completely customizable)
Spoiler – FWE

If I had to choose only one mod to load this would be it…..techinically it would be 4 mods because it needs CALIBR, CRAFT, and FOSE to run correctly

I appreciate the suggestion, but I already took a good long look at FWE, and eventually decided against it.

It simply adds far too much fan-made stuff for my taste.

This reminds me, I did the same: play for a few days or so and then forget about it.
Did give it a second chance but only lasted one day.
So probably time for another install

This thread inspired me to look for community made quests.

You're actually playing the FO3 metagame.

It's called "Find the mods that will make it a good experience"

@ DArtagnan That's one fun game

But then it's followed by the "Why is F3 crashing" game and then "Find the correct load order" adventure.

As for mods….well here we go. I have a ton of them and I'll just post a few "must have" mods for replaying F3

First and foremost is the one I mentioned earlier….FWE Fallout Wanderers Edition….see the spoiler tag for all of the changes.

Marts Mutant Mod - Tons of new creatures, new AI, factions all kinds of stuff.

FOIP - Makes it so you can use both FWE and MMM together.

Fellout - Get's rid of the green tint to everything. Also makes night time a lot more dangerous since you can't see very far.

Darnified and ironsights ….JDR already explained those

VTAP - A radio station where you can play your own music. I love wandering around blasting mutants to bits while listening to Ministry

CASM -Cipscis' Automatic Save Manager replaces Fallout 3's saving system so that you no longer have to rely on only a single autosave or quicksave to fall back on. This comes in handy if your savegame gets corrupted.

NMC's Terrain Pack - A great texture pack.

Type 3 female body replacer - Replaces butt ugly Beth characters. *Adult only*

Enhanced Night Sky - Title says it all.

Night Vision Goggles - It's exactly what it says.

Unofficial Patch - Fixes a lot of bugs that still remained (funny how every Beth game needs some kind of unofficial patch )

Treasure Maps - Scatters some hidden treasure around the wasteland. You'll find clues that you'll have to figure out on your own.

Here are a few I heard about, but haven't installed them yet.

Project Beauty - Makes everyone in the game a little less butt ugly.

***Real Time Settler*** - Now this one I would love to try out, but I'm afraid it will mess with FWE or MMM. I read about this mod in a magazine, it makes it so you can create your own settlement. Truly amazing what this guy did. Here are the bullet points:

- setting up and managing your own village
- gathering materials
- blueprinting objects
- crafting of weapons, clothing and equipment
- defending against encounter attacks
- ability to recruit most NPCs in the game as companions or villagers
- enterable house interiors for your inhabitants
- three universal types of interiors.
- destructible walls, watchtowers and other facilities / credit to skykappa
- universal repair parts for your armors and weapons
- Fruit tree and vegetable farming / credit to ripvanwinkle111
- Faction disguises
- and much more (take a look at video section),

Here's some utilities:

Fose - Fallout Script extender…a must for a lot of mods

FOMM - Fallout Mod Manager helps you move around your mods and install them.

BOSS for F3 - Automatically puts your mods in the correct load order.

FO3 Edit - Great utility. Mostly just used this to make merged patches.

There are a few others, but those are basically the essentials I use for playing Fallout 3 the way I like it.

Personally I love companion mods. Only problem is that they make the game radically easier, but I really missed having a party in F3.

Hehe, yeah, I spent more time finding/downloading mods and breaking the game in Oblivion than I ever did playing it.

Last time I played FO3 with all the DLC - I really tried to limit myself to key mods, with FWE being the main one.

Still, I ended up crashing too much - and the game just became too frustrating, because it didn't really work.

I commend people who're able to find mods without breaking the game in some way, but I haven't succeeded yet. Pretty sad, because I'd love to explore the world with decent gameplay (through mods) - but it looks like it won't happen.

Not having a party is one of my favorite aspects of FO3.

For quest mods I have downloaded 4 quests from the same guy, A Note Easily Missed, An Evening with Mr Manchester and In The Shadow of the Swamp and To sleep - perchance to dream. They seem to have earned very high endorsements on nexus

Nevermind.

Just finished "A Note Easily Missed". First custom quest I played so I have nothing to compare it with, but it is quite well made for a guys first attempt. It relies more on puzzles than fighting and tell a story through notes and computer logs. Nothing I would reinstall F3 for though.

Yeah. The "party" aspect of FO 1/2 was poorly done given their propensity to kill you.
