[Mod] Vurt's Gothic II Texture Pack
November 1st, 2010, 12:04
Vurt's Gothic II Graphics Overhaul
Current features (v0.7):
* Works for Gothic 2 NotR and "vanilla" Gothic 2. I recommend using NotR since i've added many graphical improvements to the addon.
* New meshes to improvements the look of the natural environment. Plants, trees / tree stumps, grasses, mushrooms etc. Old World has been given extra care since many of the meshes there were extremely blocky.
* The default version has very few different trees and other plants, this mod ups the amount of different pines, conifers and plants.
* Improved herbs. In vanilla Gothic 2 the herbs are often stuck too deep into the ground, it looks ugly and sometimes the mesh is almost completely hidden. This mod brings them up a bit further and most has been given a slight graphical update.
* New textures for landscape, architecture, monsters, blood… Some of the clothes, armors and weapons are also enhanced or changed completely.
* New water. 80 frames of animation (original is 10 frames).
* Resculpted rocks and cliffs that are much larger, clouds and sometimes trees are added to the tops.
* New rain, sun, skies (sun is still experimental).
* Only aesthetics, no gameplay changes.
* 600+ new textures, 60+ New or improved models

Installation
Drag/drop the .vdf into /data (example: C:\Steam\steamapps\common\gothic ii\Data)
Copy the Gothic.ini if you want my fog, sky colors and tweaked settings. If your water is flashing you might need to use this file (take a backup of your old Gothic.ini file first!). This files goes into C:\Steam\steamapps\common\gothic ii\system
Download

My Gothic.ini (use if you get flickering water):
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/69293119/Gothic.ini
You should either start a new game OR reload the first map (by going to any other map and then coming back to it) to avoid missing trees and edits i've done to the map.
My recommended Nvidia settings. <- click
Supersampling is important for leaves and other textures that uses an alpha channel to look good, just turning on Anti-Aliasing doesnt help these kinds of of textures. This goes for any game out there, not just Gothic2.

If you liked this mod you might want to check out my other work.
Fallout is one of the classic RPG series for the PC, please check out my Fallout New Vegas Flora Overhaul and if you're Bethesda / TES fan you also might want to check out my extensive list of Morrowind flora mods. For Bethesdas latest game Skyrim I have created yet another flora overhaul, check it out here. One of the absolutely best and most atmospheric PC games ever created, imo, is System Shock 2, here are my mods on SystemShock.org.

Hey.
Will this texture pack affect the gameplay in any way?
How do we install it?
Thank you for all the work you put into this.
PS : Now we demand one for Gothic I right now!

No, its just textures and a few meshes, so it doesnt change gameplay in any way. It should be complatible with any mod too.
Drop the the file where all other .vdf files are (..\Gothic II\Data) and it should work.

Great.
I remember using a 32Gb texture pack done by Postal.
File hosted on Rpgdot back in the days.
It was a great file.
By what I've seen from the pictures that you showed us here, I can't wait to use yours.
I might try it soon.
Thanks again.

I'd just like to interject here and point out that I'm not going to say anything to spoil the mood, Chief. I'll just float here and watch. Don't mind me, just sitting here, floating and watching, that's me.

This mod was created in a period of 2 weeks so don't expect a complete overhaul and don't expect every texture be perfect.
It was meant to be a small replacer for my personal use for some of the textures i didn't like, but the mod grew into this "partial overhaul".
Have fun and i hope you enjoy the mod.

Vurt, you are a golden god. I haven't tried your texture pack yet (as I'm at work and I just found this thread), but I just started playing Gothic 2 again recently (for like the 20th time) and I might just start over just to try this mod! It looks great and I appreciate that you took the time to create something like this when it's been such a long time since this game has been released. Still trying to get co-workers to try Gothic 2: NOTR; depending on how I like the textures, this mod may be canon for me from now on…
Again, thank you SO MUCH!

That would be awesome - also, Gothic 1 retexturing would be amazing as well, of course. By the way, I've found 7-zip to be an amazing tool for compression. It does almost every compression filetype (with the exception of .ace, I think). Makes it easy for splitting files as well as modifying the compression complexity (storage vs super-compression). Keep up the good work!

For G1 these guys have done a pretty awesome job so far;
http://www.gothic-reloaded-mod.de
Not sure if its ever going to be relased though. They've worked with it for 3 years i believe, and in that time the team havent created nearly as many textures that i did for this mod (which took me approx. 2 weeks). Their standards are a bit out of proportion.

I'm really anxious to try this mod out. From the screenshots I've seen it looks incredible. It's hopefully gonna make the best game ever a bit better! One thing, though. The Rapidshare link seems broken. Could you maybe check into that?
November 9th, 2010, 13:30
Fixed the Rapidshare link, 10 more downloads are available.
The torrent should be very fast though - 6 seeders + i'm on a 100Mbit fiber LAN connection

Yes, the .torrent is probably the ideal way. I forgot to seed that on my media PC before I left for work, but I will when I get back. I got around 250kb/s down or so…

You're vurt? Heh, I never realised, I'd even replied to before you on the Bethesda forums (my username there is dbankier) regarding your Morrowind mods, which are some of the best graphical upgrades. Small world!

Thanks heaps for this vurt, a very noticeable improvement.
Re-installed and started another play through last night, such great gameplay and already I've found whole areas that I'd missed previously. Love it.
