The Academy Awards got it wrong…
March 2nd, 2011, 11:13
I came across this article on Yahoo earlier today. I know there are a lot of movie buffs here at The Watch, so I though it would be interesting to hear some opinions on it.
The authors apparently didn't agree with this year's winner of Best Picture at the Academy Awards, and decided to also write about 9 other years that they thought the wrong picture was chosen. For each of the years in question, they list the movie that won and then the movie they think *should* have won.
Of course it's subjective, but I thought they really hit the nail on the head with some of their choices. I especially agree with them about 1999 and 1991.
Thoughts?

The King's Speech was way way way better than the over-appreciated Social Network. The Social Network wasn't bad at all, but I would not even nominate it for an oscar. It's just a decent movie imo. I'd hate the fact that Facebook has so much recognition to be the reason why this movie got all this attention.
But as for other years, yeah Saving Private Ryan should've won. Same for L.A. Confidential, Goodfellas.

Well, I'd say get rid of the entire Oscar charade before trying to nominate anything for its artistic merit.

I think 1995 is an interesting year to debate. Forest Gump won Best Picture, but you could make a strong case for either Pulp Fiction(the author's choice) or The Shawshank Redemption as well.

I've never seen this "Social Network" cinema ad, but I think I could never ever believe that someone could make a better soundtrack/music/film score that the one for "how to train your dragon" … I have this soundtrack CD, and it is one of the very best, most dynamic soundtracks that I've heard in ages !
But of course this is subjective, too …

When in 1980 I saw winning the oscar "Kramer vs Kramer" instead of "Apocalypse Now" or when in the next year, in 1981, the winner was "Ordinary People" instead of "Raging Bull" I stop sincerely bothering with the oscars.
This year was no different. I didn't see , nor I'm inclined to, "Social Network", but for me the best, and miles away, were "True Grit" and "The Black Swan".
As for LA Confidential, it should be a crime punished by law not to having see it. Please JDR13, do yourself a favour, go get it. And yes, in that year it should have also won the best picture and director, if there was any justice with the oscars. Sorry ladies, but Titanic, is just a sinking piece of sentimental diarrhoea, so common in James Cameron's movies.
These, IMHO.

Agreed with most of the article.
The Shawshank Redemption is a notable omission in the 1995 part.
Rocky was a funny winner, especially considering it was against Taxi Driver, but, well, the film is hard not to like.
And yep, L.A. Confidential is a must see. One of the few films I´ve seen from the nineties I just couldn´t find any flaw with and in the same league with noir-ish impeccables such as Double Indemnity or Chinatown.
Also, Vertigo.

Oscars, Grammys, whatever … all self-congratulatory circle-jerks where they celebrate what lines their pockets and pretend to be artsy by giving awards to Ghandi …
There are just too many examples of 'snubs' … the year Rocky won was a great one.
