Reading up on Israel vs Palestine (or how to get in contact with PJ)
Reading up on Israel vs Palestine (or how to get in contact with PJ)
February 25th, 2011, 10:52
Lately I've been reading an Israel vs Palestine thread on another forum and I've concluded that this is yet another issue I don't really know anything about. Now, for a long time I've dealt with this kind of thing by not talking about it, figuring I'll learn more eventually. I've come to realize that the only way this learning will come if I get my ass out of the wagon and activly teach myself.
So, where do I start, I wonder? I've been thinking of hitting Wikipedia, but I also think doing some more serious reading would be a good idea. So I wonder if anyone have any suggestions on good litterature for the purpouse of reading up on the conflict?
I also figured PJ does (he seems to be good with that kind of thing), but he seems to have moved on to greener pastures. Anyone who knows how to find him?

The conflict is based on a combination of the perpetual hatred tradition so deeply vested in the human heart, human ignorance, and a (very understandable) lack of will to change it around.
All you really need to know, I'd say.

What I know of the conflict comes from a very long education about it, both self-educated and through other people. PJ and I have very similar viewpoints except that his are are slightly more pro-Palestinian and mine are slightly more pro-Israeli.
Unfortunately, like DArtagnan said, this conflict is so deeply rooted it is very hard to get out of the emotional and look at it from a purely rational viewpoint, even though, if everyone were of the same view as PJ and I, a conclusion to the conflict could have been found a long time ago.
I don't have specific sources to give you, but I would strongly suggest reading both sides of the story from a standpoint that is as little anti-one-side or anti-the-other-side as possible.
It is something very subtle in this, but being pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel are very different and so are pro-Israeli and anti-Palestinian.
A lot of people are purely anti-Arab/Palestinian/Islam and make many the same points as pro-Israeli, but inside some of the arguments are very hated ones, same for anti-Israeli/Jewish sentiments and arguments.
If you have any questions, I would be glad to try and answer to the best of my capability.
Might I ask what sparked this interest all of a sudden, especially since for once Israel is NOT on the headlines ?

This conflict is not only multi-faceted in both a religious and political sense, but full of all kinds of bias. The media is quite unreliable, because this bias permeates every report and MUCH that happens is NEVER reported. The best way to learn, is actually to visit those places as some of my friends did last year and it had a deep impact on them. I'd love to do so myself, but can't presently afford it. I have an obvious bias, so I try to avoid forum discussions where possible. I doubt a wikii will give much worthwhile information though.

That's what made me take this initiative. I guess you could say it was the life equivalent of "I got a big XP boost and gained two levels".

And how old are you? That young to think that old(er) people can't change the way they satisfy their appetite or their field(s) of interest? You're 23 and 7 months?![]()
