Two questions born of ignorance
May 10th, 2011, 03:52
1. What is a "combo" (other than merely an abbreviation of the word "combination")? Is it an action performed in a game by pressing a certain combination of buttons or keys simultaneously? In a specific sequence? If either of these is correct, then what is a "one button combo" (a term I've seen that doesn't immediately make any sense)?
2. What is a "counterattack"? Is it merely an attack you make immediately after having been attacked? Is it simply a defensive stance? Or is it an attack you make that counters an attack being made against you and either prevents that attack from harming you at all or helps reduce its effectiveness?
Teach me, oh wise ones.

Yes, it can be; Yes and yes, it can be. Hope that helps!!
Gothic is good for combos. Some games (Witcher) have timing combos where you press the same button/key at specific times to add a different move to your original strike.

I appreciate your taking the time to provide me with some insight, but I haven't played Gothic or the Witcher, so I can't use them as a frame of reference. Since most of the games I play are point-and-click adventure games, RPG's with turn-based combat, turn-based strategy games, and so-called puzzle or brain games (I'm a math geek, you see), I haven't had much exposure to more action-oriented games (although I did like Blood and the original Unreal).

Yes, well I MUCH prefer TB games myself, but they are few and far between. You won't get stuff like combos in them usually. I do remember some TB games which had a countersrike as part of a turn; usually it was an automatic response. I'm not a fan of timing combos as I suck at those clicky things!!

In a fighting game, 'one-button combo' may refer to a combo that's triggered by pressing the same button repeatedly (like Chun Li's Flash Kick), or (more frequently used) to combos that can be mapped to one button (which would make handling a certain character quite easy).
