Default Fallout New Vegas MOD suggestions

May 29th, 2011, 21:13
I've been throwing around the idea of playing through FO:NV again and am having a hard time finding definitive "must-have" mods for a second playthrough.

I was considering:
A World of Pain
FOOK
Increased Wasteland Spawns
MTUI (UI Overhaul)

Any comments or other suggestions?

I haven't played New Vegas in a while, but these mods were an absolute must when I did:

Warzones
For all this in-game discussion of 'WAR', there wasn't that much 'WAR', was there?
Now there is.
This mod does what it says… It adds EPIC battles throughout the Mojave Wasteland.
While exploring the Mojave Wasteland, you will come upon battles containing many, many NPCs.
At last count there are more than 900 NEW, ANGRY NPCS, 100s of NEW, CUSTOM, on and off-map 'acres' and more to come!
Increased Wasteland Spawns (If you don't use Warzones)

Arwen's Realism Tweaks (absolute must for a much harder experience. There are five modules and they are all very realistic. I didn't load all five of them. I'm not exactly that crazy yet This may conflict with Warzones. I'm always worried about putting two major mods into a game. I did play a little bit with them loaded and it seem to run just fine, but I didn't play with them together for very long.)
Arwen's Homepage

Detailed Normals - Texture Pack (does exactly what it says)

I was going to recommend Darnified….but I can't find the stupid thing, so the next best choice is MTUI

MTUI (basically gets rid of the console UI)

Depth of Field
(does exactly what it says)

Fellout NV (Same as Fellout, but gets rid of the orange instead of the green.)

harder hardcore rates (If Arwen's is too much for you then try this one.)

Higher Stakes Gambling
(once again does exactly what it says)

Beware of GIRLZ Hirez Replacer (adult) (Does exactly what it says)

*Warning* I do not know for sure if all of those are compatible. Most of them are, but the big mods like Warzones and especially Arwen's might conflict with other mods that do similar things. I was in the middle of testing them when I got sidetracked.

Here are a few that look interesting, but I have not tried them out:

Project Nevada

Project Nevada is a mod aiming to make Fallout: New Vegas a more interesting - eventually more challenging - but surely more fun experience for you.
Created by the team responsible for the Fallout 3 Wanderers Edition (FWE), we're leaving the barren DC wasteland behind and move on west to new, exciting regions.

Project Nevada is not an overhaul, instead it's organized as a set of themed modules.
Each module can address different aspects of the game and target different audiences, but they are also designed to work in conjunction.
Our vision is to allow players picking the modules they want and using them together with any mod they like, instead of forcing them to make the all-or-nothing choice.
See the next sections for detailed descriptions and features of all current modules.
Monster Mod (Adds 116 new creatures and the pics don't look half bad.)

If you're going the hardcore way, and I'm guessing you will, "Bottle that water" mod is a great addition. It does what it says, allows you to bottle water from water sources. Linky: http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloa…e.php?id=34840

Thanks guys - there's a couple there I hadn't seen beforehand. I'm leery of loading up too many at once after my last run through FO3 was heavily modded and ended in me crashing nonstop 80 hours into the game. I definitely want a new experience for my next New Vegas run though… time to roll the dice.

Forgot to warn you of this in the "Bottle that water" mod.
KNOWN ISSUES: Currently bottling water from irradiated water
surfaces will result in pure water. Sinks, pumps ect will
bottle correctly since they are done via different scripts.
This won't be fixed until i can figure out how to determine if
the water has rads or not.
You'll need to watch yourself to NOT cheat with this (it would kinda defeat the whole purpose of the Hardcore mode if you did).

As to the mods in the Servants of the Horned Rat's () post, I noticed that the "harder hardcore rates" seems to just increase the rate by which your needs accumulate, i.e. you'll get hungry, thirsty and sleepy double or triple as fast. That seems kind of iffy, IMO, as the rates would become ridiculously fast (unless you tweak the timescale, but even then the end result would probably be just silly, instead of realistic). Note that I haven't tried the mod, this is just based on a quick read of the mod's description.

Ok, my turn to ask for people's mods.

I'm starting up another adventure into New Vegas and was wondering what mods people are using. I haven't played the game in awhile so there are a lot of them that I don't know about.

Here's what I got planned so far:

Arwen's or XFO for total game balance. Arwen's is hardcore. There are a few things in her tweaks that make me hesitant to give it another shot (no level up health increase for starters). I'm not sure if I really want all that. XFO's changes the game balance along with many other things and is highly customizable. I'll probably end up with Arwen's, but wanted to know if anyone has used XFO?

I have a bunch of texture upgrades and visual upgrades such as Fellout or Neveda Skies, Electro-City, OJO BUENO High Quality Texture, Enhanced Shaders and a few others for the characters.

Environment mods will be either Monster Mod and IWS (Increased Wasteland Spawn) or I'm just going to add Warzones.

Only a few quest mods with New Vegas Bounties I and NVB II.

Since someone convinced me (can't remember who recommended this mod) to include my first companion mod ever. Never had them for Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3 or Fallout New Vegas so this is a first. Willow is being thrown in just to see what all the fuss is about.

As you can see most of the mods are cosmetic only with a few main mods that affect the environment and gameplay. I don't like messing around with too many mods that might or might not affect each other.

If anyone can add any that they've liked please share.

Careful with IWS, it's actually crashing Vanilla with the latest 1.3 patch. It's what's holding up my playthrough actually; I *really* want it as a replacement for Mad Mart's Mutant Mod.

Have you looked into FOOK as an overhaul mod at all? It was updated on May 31st to work with the latest DLCs.

Thanks Drithius, I did not know about the crashing. I used it before the 1.3 patch. I think I'll just use Warzones and hope that it's stable.

I've used FOOK for Fallout 3. In the end I didn't like it. It seemed just like a gun mod with all kinds of added weapons. I wanted harder enemies and other tweaks to the game as well. I went with XFO's instead and then later on FWE. I'll check out this FOOK to see if it is any different. Thanks for the reminder.

@DeepO I saw that just yesterday. I'll always see those two bears high-fiving now

I have reached the conclusion that the requirement to drink water doesn't work well. Increasing the H20 loss doesn't make the game more fun.

First reason is that mechanically there is just one object that gives decent amount of water (water in bottle). It quickly becomes a habit to buy this single item all the time as springs are too few. Fruits with water doesn't give enough H20 to be an alternative and Sarsaparilla even causes dehydration. When it becomes evident that there is only one solution to a problem the game becomes a bit simplified and a single binary mechanic takes over the game.

Second issue is that time in FNV is abstract and Bottled Water isn't. While you might have to drink 4-5 litres per day in the desert, when days are mere hours of playtime you must drink water more often than normal.

Third issue is that a bottle doesn't give enough H20. You frequently have to quench 5 bottles in a row to get rid of dehydration rather than "a bottle once in awhile". This isn't how thirst and dehydration works. A faster dehydration and maybe a 1-100 (one drink to cure) rather than 1-1000 scale (10 bottles to cure) would have been better.

I use Project Nevada with only the gameplay tweaks, not rebalance or cybernetics. These add functions you find in a regular FPS; sprinting, grenade key, dynamic crosshair etc. But I dropped the visor mod since I felt it just limited vision.

I'm running AWOP and FOOK.

I'm also running IWS…Increased Wasteland Spawns, which is useful if you do a lot of wandering around.

And I'm running WME, which adds mods to all the weapons.

If you think you'd like to make major changes to the rules, you might consider XFO, which is highly customizable.

Those 3 + MTUI are the only mods I truly want to nudge together… but IWS is causing crashes You're not playing FO:NV ver. 1.3 with those are you? And if so, how?

edit: in related news, I just performed my daily Nexus check for any IWS updates and it seems the original modder posted he's now looking into it. Huzzah.
Hey guys and gals
Its been brought to my attention that IWS is out of date and causes the game to crash. Can anyone here give me information I need on the nature of the crashes and suggest steps needed to fix the problem?

Ill try to get a fix up this week but since I have been away for so long it will be hard for me to get back into things without your help.

Downloading OJO BUENO High Quality Texture Workshop and ELECTRO-CITY - Relighting the Wasteland.

Larger mods
Monster Mod (adds +100 monsters with new models to the game)

Companions
All Companions Essential (I play hardcore because eating is fun, but with the poor A.I. dying companions just wont do)
Companion Dressup (Allow you to change what companions wear)
Companion Sandbox Mode (Companions will interact with the environment when resting)
Light Step ED-E (ED-E improvements, like do not set of mines)
Unlimited Companions Beta (Removes the limit on companions in order to have a party)
Willow (The best companion mod out there IMO)

User Interface
DarNified UI NV (I prefer this over MTUI)
Project Nevada (Implements a ton of improvements to gameplay such as making the game having things from modern FPS)

Visuals
Arenovalis Weapon Retex Pack (improved textures on weapons)
BEWARE OF GIRL Type 3 HiRez HiDetailed Replacer (NSFW) (Female bodies look better)
Detailed Normals (Makes the landscape look better)
Enhanced Blood Textures (Makes blood looks better)
Fellout NV (Removes the orange hue, all hail the blue sky)
FNV Enhanced Shaders (Adds shaders so that the game look better. Including Depth of Field)
Mikotos Beauty Pack (Adds new hairstyles and a couple of other things)
Misc Item Icons (Add items for miscellaneous items that do not have one)
Nevada Skies (Adds better looking skies)
Re-Animated (Improves the animations throughout the game)

You can use Fellout and Nevada skies? I was worried about those two conflicting since I don't really understand what Nevada Skies does yet (I'm still installing and making the load order for the game).

I knew there was a reason I didn't load Fellout this time because in the description it says it works with Fellout 1.0 and Fellout is now up to 1.2. Since I don't want to use an older version I think I'll skip it this time.

That's not that big of a deal anyways. Electrocity has an option for darker nights and I have no idea what Nevada Skies is going to do. I'm going to play it for a bit and if the nights aren't that dark then load elctrocity's darker nights.

I'm going to add one more mod to the "must have" list and that's BOSS, Better Oblivion Sorter Software.

I've been using this program since Oblivion. This essenstial little program has fixed many headaches I've had with Oblivion and Fallout 3 load orders. Even though the name of the software says that it's for Oblivion it will work with Fallout 3 and New Vegas. I just used it and it recognized and sorted all of my mods.

Nevada Skies makes the sky look awesome, especially with the cloud pack, and it also add weather effects.

I would pick Nevada Skies over Fellout anyday. Nevada Skies is one of the mods with greatest impact on visual quality out there. URWLIfied that is included in Nevada Skies do the same thing as Fellout anyway.

Fellout without Nevada Skies

Fellout with Nevada Skies

Nevada Skies only
