GOG Complete Baldurs Gate issue
August 6th, 2011, 11:40
Hello foru(mites)
Bought the GOG Complete Baldurs gate collection (incl ToSC, which I had not played before), played for some time, went to Beregost, returned to the Friendly arms Inn…but cannot enter any buildings without the game freezing (never crashed, or dumped an error log. Just froze with a black screen). I tried uninstalling/reinstalling, but the issue is def in my saved games (I have no old ones…grrr) I read something about a save game bug after you visit Beregost, but I tried running some Java app to fix it,which did nothing. So basically my saves are corrupted - I am considering starting again, but I don't want the same thing to happen.
Any suggestions, specifically related to the GOG version? I never had this issues with my old Bioware discs (but I do not have ToSC expansion).
Thanks!

…anyone? Has anyone has this problem using their original BW disks + the ToSC expansion? I also installed (and then uninstalled) the wide screen mod (which looked pretty damn ugly). I don't think that should have broken anything…right..?

Did you check file integrity when you installed? GOG has a sometimes serious issue with corrupt downloads.

I would try the forum at GOG, as well as the official Bioware forums, and perhaps GameBanshee as well.

Thanks for the suggestions - checked the installer, its fine and posted on GOG forum. No saving me this time :-0 Anyway, ended up buying the badurs gate 2 compilation as well (I have them on disk, but wanted an updated version…well, I assume updated!) I have reinstalled everything, and I'm running some mods etc to run it all on theBG2 engine - looks good!) Haven't entered Beregost yet, but I will be careful this time….

Well hopefully you won't experience the bug again.
Btw: here's a related thread I found at GOG. You can also find a slew of others by Googling "Beregost bug".
*Edit* Also, are you using Windows 7 or Vista 64bit by any chance? If so, in my experience it always helps to avoid installing older games to the default Program Files (x86) directory. Just install older titles directly to your C: drive instead.

i thought this only affected BGTutu installs. It always pays to do a clean save before visiting beregost and then after you leave do a quick save and reneter and leave again - if it hasn't crashed by now you then reload your quicksave and you should be good.

No, the Beregost bug exists in all versions afaik. I think it's something of a widespread myth that it only affects certain versions.
Anyway, there is a java application called "Beregost Savegame Fixer" or some such thing, which will fix savegames that got corrupted due to the Beregost bug.

Edit: If you already installed your game in the default directory, making a copy of the complete directory somewhere, using the tool on that and copying the changed data back might help. But Booboo has chosen a different way to go now anyway, I assume…
Nothing to see here.

If you manage to leave Beregost and get to Friendly Arms Inn (or any other area), it's some other bug that I honestly haven't bumped into.

Well, no issues so far! Have been to Beregost, back to Friendly Arms and sorted out all the necessary quests. Its great to be playing BG1 again after a few (5?) years. Really looks good on the BG2 engine. I followed the suggested 'minimal mods' install for BG1+BG2 on the GOG forums, if anyone is curious. I have both BG1 and BG2 from GoG at this point.
