Default Printed Maps

October 3rd, 2011, 12:40
I am big fan of printed Maps of game worlds and I like to collect them.

I think I will rate the map which came with Morrowind as the best (for the amount of details on the printed map) I have and the map from Oblivion and Witcher 2 as soso.

Anyway I wanted to get a list of games(even non RPG) which comes with good printed maps like Morrowind so that I can buy them. Please post away!

Huge fan of the printed map. Just doesn't feel like a real CRPG without one!

All of the Ultima's had printed maps. (Well, don't know about the Underworld games). I know III-IX all had cloth ones as I still have them all! I imagine I and II did as well, but the only copies I have are ones that came with Ultima Collection CD in a printed book.

I want to say Icewind Dale did, but I'm not 100% on that. NeverWinterNights did, but I remember it seeming to be very cheap feeling. Baldur's Gate had a printed one, but it was that plastic feeling paper.

I think all the Might & Magic games came with maps. I know at least M&M VI-IX did.

@blatantninja- Icewind Dale indeed came with a map, I just checked my boxed copy.

Last game I bought that had a cloth map was Dragon Age: Origins.

If you can get them - printed maps of the *real* world from around 1800 and before re a real treat to look at - because they are not entirel focuised on pure information, but also have a strong artistic look … It's the same with houses nowadays : Today they are merely a tool for give people places to live in - in former centuries at least the better builings had embellishments as well !

Everything is so much focused on rationality that everything begins to lose its "soul" …

Most cRPG printed maps are useless and a waste of paper/cloth. The one in Morrowind is a notable exception because it actually contains enough detail for you to use it to plan adventures and travel.

The calendar on my wall has a different old map for each month. I love looking at the things!

Morrowind's map is the best I've ever seen, since you could actually use it to find interesting spots, but Redguard's was quite good, too. They actually sat outside with a blowtorch and singed the edges of the paper to give it an old feel. You don't get that kind of love in mainstream development anymore.

Oblivion's map was a massive disappointment after those. It was completely useless and didn't even look very nice.

Let's hope Skyrim gets a Morrowind type map. Might and Magic has maps from 3-8 for sure. I can't remember if 9 has one, but I'll look if I remember. Icewind Dale, Dragon Age I, most of the Ultimas, Bard's Tale series, are a few more.

The Ultima ones had longitude and latitude points on them and often locations would be referenced by their degrees in game so those maps were really useful.

We shouldn't be surprised, really, after that ridiculous menu system. I mean, is a real, physical map AWESOME enough for today's gamer?

This is one of those fine old school crpg traditions. I've got a few up on my wall decorating my cave actually, including:

Might and Magic I (Yes, it came with a map)
Ultima VI, IX and VII: (the latter of which is a handkerchief type which I got with an original floppy verison for pc years ago.)
Ultima Underworld (the first level - lovely map)
Icewind Dale

I concur with what has been said about the Morrowind map. A friend and I used to have great conversations based upon our explorations and would refer to the map regularly to demonstrate where we'd been, or where our next adventure was going to be.

I also just bought the Witcher 2 and note that it comes with a rather nice looking map. Good to see the tradition is being kept alive.

When I waas a teenager, I was almost framing the maps that came with LOTR as well - and almost the map of Numenor, too.

I just found them so nicely drawn.

A few years ago I bought a printing of a map of this area that was created one or two centuries ago.

I forgot about these. I think I still have the old box for Magic Candle lying around somewhere. I wonder if the map is in it……
