Default Ig Nobel prizes 2011

September 30th, 2011, 09:42
The winners of Ig Nobel prizes are published today: http://improbable.com/ig/ig-pastwinners.html

I'm especially interested in medicine, of course, which was awarded to Lewis, Snyder and Feldman for "The Effect of Acute Increase in Urge to Void on Cognitive Function in Healthy Adults"

And of course I'm also interested in the peace prize which was awarded Arturas Zuokas, the mayor of Vilnius, LITHUANIA, for demonstrating that the problem of illegally parked luxury cars can be solved by running them over with an armored tank.

For those of you who don't know, The Id Nobel prizes are for "… achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think", and is " … intended to celebrate the unusual, honor the imaginative — and spur people's interest in science, medicine, and technology." The prizes are awarded by the (humourous) "Journal of Improbable results", which is related to the "Journal of Irreproducible results" Some of the works awarded are obviously meant as a joke, others are … probably not.

Thanks, I always get a good kick of some of these.

This, for example,
"To be a high achiever, always work on something important, using it as a way to avoid doing something that's even more important."
certainly got me thinking .

I had a feeling something was wrong with that. It sure didn't work right when I tried it.

It was probably set up by Microsoft. You know, the only thing Microsoft could make that didn't suck, would be a vacuum cleaner. (Don't remember where I heard that one).

says pibbur who at the moment is outside said radius.

While I applaud his award Arturas Zuokas' achievement was clearly made using an armored personal carrier and not a tank. Very shoddy reporting.

The concept of a Nobel prize is counterproductive to itself.

Actually, the real Nobel Prize ceremony will be held on December 10th. This past week Sweden and Norway just gave out the awards -ehm- Nobel Prizes. Also, to stay on topic a bit, I'm rather interested in why humans sigh and why a certain beetle likes to make sweet love to an Australian beer bottle. As I see it, isn't humans the only animals that sigh?

My dog is the master of sighing… He also seems to be well aware of what his damnable cute face can win him
