Ig Nobel prizes 2011
September 30th, 2011, 09:42
The winners of Ig Nobel prizes are published today: http://improbable.com/ig/ig-pastwinners.html
I'm especially interested in medicine, of course, which was awarded to Lewis, Snyder and Feldman for "The Effect of Acute Increase in Urge to Void on Cognitive Function in Healthy Adults"
And of course I'm also interested in the peace prize which was awarded Arturas Zuokas, the mayor of Vilnius, LITHUANIA, for demonstrating that the problem of illegally parked luxury cars can be solved by running them over with an armored tank.
For those of you who don't know, The Id Nobel prizes are for "… achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think", and is " … intended to celebrate the unusual, honor the imaginative — and spur people's interest in science, medicine, and technology." The prizes are awarded by the (humourous) "Journal of Improbable results", which is related to the "Journal of Irreproducible results" Some of the works awarded are obviously meant as a joke, others are … probably not.
Says pibbur
"There was a small misprint in our article from last month, The Black Hole: An Inexpensive Vacuum Cleaner. Where the article read Place the vacuum hose just inside the Swartzchild Radius please substitute Place the vacuum hose just outside the Swartzchild Radius. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused."

Thanks, I always get a good kick of some of these.
This, for example,
"To be a high achiever, always work on something important, using it as a way to avoid doing something that's even more important."
certainly got me thinking

Sorry. No pearls of wisdom in this oyster.
Dallas Cowboys: Can we be done with the offseason? / / Detroit Red Wings: At least we get a new coach

While I applaud his award Arturas Zuokas' achievement was clearly made using an armored personal carrier and not a tank. Very shoddy reporting.

Actually, the real Nobel Prize ceremony will be held on December 10th. This past week Sweden and Norway just gave out the awards -ehm- Nobel Prizes. Also, to stay on topic a bit, I'm rather interested in why humans sigh and why a certain beetle likes to make sweet love to an Australian beer bottle. As I see it, isn't humans the only animals that sigh?
