If you decide to play Arx Fatalis, then figure out how to "store" runes as soon as possible (as in you can draw several before combat starts, and use them with a hotkey). I did not figure this bit out until quite late, and got quite proficient in drawing several runes in the heat of combat, but it was a bit of a "doh" moment when I figured out that that was not how I was supposed to do things (the manual or the options menu should hopefully tell you how to do this, but there is nothing in-game about it).
