The Banner Saga Ending [possible spoilers]

Hi, everyone.
Just finished the-long-awaited-and-blah-blah-blah The Banner Saga. Well… The game's OK. There are tactical fights, lots of choices and conseqences. BUT WTF??? THIS way to end the game? Why the hell i've so eagerly tried to save all those clansmen and Varl? It's not that unfair, it's pointless in the end. Or am i getting something wrong and the are alternative endings?
