I think they look dumb and oversized and also pretty cool. I'm conflicted.

Can't say it's the kind of thing that bothers me much, but it does look a bit silly.

No. They are dumb and oversized.

And since I am posting on this topic again anyway: in my opinion the problem is not so much that there are spikes, spikes can be pretty cool and menacing, but that they (1) have no discernible function (2) visually clash with both the castle and the surroundings (3) are trivial polyhedrons with 3 or 4 surfaces that look like a graphics bug. (3) could be alleviated by adding more detail, (2) by giving the castle a more menacing appearance and (1) by reducing their size and placing many more spikes / armaments strategically as a kind of monster / dragon defence. As it is, though: dumb and oversized.

All this from 2 tiny screen shots, sometimes the threads that get a lot of attention really surprises me.

It's a Bioware news-bit so of course it gets all the attention. I find this happens on most news sites. Check out GameBanshee or RPG Codex as they are hilarious.

As they are, they prevent dragons from landing.
