Default How does barter work in FO2?

July 28th, 2014, 16:49
I have a char with 4 char and 6 barter. I increased it to 12, an effective increase of 100% and the ONLY discount i get is a clip of JHP that costs 150 instead of 189. Everything else stays at the SAME price. Even when i pumed 38 pts into barter the prices stay the same (even the JHP stays at 150).

What is wrong?

Initial level % = 20+(2 x Charisma)

Example: A starting Charisma of 5 would be 20+(2x5)=30\%

I'm not sure why certain items aren't being affected. Perhaps there's a minimum value needed for some items. It's been too long since I've played FO 1 or 2 to remember exactly how it worked.

I never did take barter in Fallout 2, but in Fallout 1 you could abuse it by having a high barter value and then selling things back & forth with a merchant. If your barter score was high enough, you would get more caps from selling an item to the merchant than the same item would cost for you to buy. It's possible that they fixed this in Fallout 2.

To be honest though, barter is a rather useless skill in all the Fallout titles. Money is not exactly in short supply, and you'll get a lot more bang for your skillpoints by investing in anything else.

Neither did I. Barter.
I stole everything I wanted in my countless replays.

I agree. I remember it being especially useless in FO3.

Sadly, I remember nothing from FO3 except some whatnot thing that was supposed to be a sunken ship. And crashes.
