Default Elminage Gothic - Review @ Hardcore Games

October 11th, 2014, 09:34
Hardcore Games posted a new review for Elminage Gothic, and awarded the game with a final score of 40/100. Here is a small sample of the review for why the score is low.

Overall, the creative monsters, dungeon crawl theme, and general art styles reminded me of a Dungeons and Dragons handbook, but as I played, it turned out to be one of the D&D editions that required pages of errata, and half a dozen house rules to be any fun.
More information.

I know he is a member of our site now so he could probably shed some light on the review. I still haven't played the game so I can't verify if he is correct.

Its kind of like Demon Whiskey, which kept the interface of Bard's Tale 1, even though it was a modern game. I had fun with it, though lots of people were so put off by the interface that they couldn't get into the game. If you look at the complaints they are: interface, crashes, and difficulty. Difficulty was certainly present in Wizardry, you have to grind at certain points to survive.

This is review is so bad it is almost criminal. Apparently the reviewer's brain saw alignments, went directly to Dungeons and Dragons and stayed there for the duration. The D & D handbooks, the D & D fantasy novels, the D & D manuals, the D & D this and that. Elminage Gothic is not a D & D game. Also relevant, Elminage Gothic is not an Adventure game.

According to Steam I have played over sixty hours of this game, during that time I have not experienced a single hang, glitch, freeze, bleep, crash or Giant Fireball Visible From Space, so I have the feeling that the reviewer's computer needs a check-up or a replacement.

The reviewer seems to be unaware that the game is a handheld to PC port. That simple fact would eliminate all those questions about the scrolling information bar, the abbreviations and other stuff that seems to be so confusing to this person.

Then we have things like:

"But I had endless difficulty figuring out which shop items could be used by which character classes, or how to hand items between party members."

Really? Hitting the Information button to check an item is that difficult? Clicking any item in the inventory automatically pops up a menu with four big buttons with different options (Use/Hand Over/Discard/Leave) on what to do with the item in question.

Those that Wander Sometimes are Lost. Indeed.

I guess the game wasn't hardcore enough for that site. Too much hand-holding .

Edit: While what I wrote looks like a cheap shot, it was triggered by the summary for the game at the end of the review:

Is It Hardcore?
Not Really
. - 40%

Awkward UI and illogical menus make this standard dungeoncrawler challenging. Only a hardcore dungeoncrawler would love it.
So, hardcore or not hardcore, that is the question… And "No!" "Yes!" is the clear answer in the review.

Digitally Downloaded gave it a modest score of 3/5, and he apparently likes that style of game.

I see this site slamming this game, and it makes me want to play it sooner rather than later. Just sayin!

How is this site slamming the game? We're talking about the review.

I didn't mean this site, I meant the Hardcore review.

There is a beautiful English word to describe what you wanted to say. It's "that".

okay its a port. that says much. why even play a port on the PC? When I see one of these I just go to my tablet- then decide if I want to buy it.

Edit:
From Segment next
http://segmentnext.com/2014/09/19/el…ls-onto-steam/
"For the PC port of the original PSP release, however, Elminage Gothic will be fitted with high resolution art and an improved interface. There are also 8 Steam Trading Cards to collect."

I guess that makes a difference. My PSP has not seen the light of Day in at least 3 years, and I dont think this game would be considered readily available without this port.
