You can, though many just help boost XP. I skip most, but some are worthwhile like thieves since you often score extra shurikens which are probably the best weapon in the game.

It's the lousiest weapon actually, the problem is game design choice.
Even bosses who can instaheal wounds, can't heal… Well… You know what effect.

Yeah I often fought rogues since that was a fast way to restock on shuriken. My rogue was the weakest combatant in my party until I discovered the importance of the shuriken skill.

The game was written in C#, so it's fairly easy to reverse engineer. Since there's not a large player base though, I haven't seen much talk of modding it (it might not have real moddability, but you -can- hack core files). Might be a way to reset some features the old-fashioned way.
Similarly, the save files can be edited - they are just password-protected zip files containing XML documents. I plan on seeing if I can turn off the hunger mechanic, which I find terribly annoying. BUT that may be a few months off. I'm just throwing the other info out there for anyone who might be interested.

Is there some way to change the default party order after character creation?
The order of the portraits on the left side of the screen can't be changed, as far as I know., but it doesn't really affect anything other than aesthetics.
Party formation on the battlefield can be changed by clicking on the little helmet just above the mini-map.
Don't know if that helps, but that pretty much covers party 'order' to my knowledge, anyway.
BTW, I think this game is outstanding, but I like these old-school games, so a lot of it is personal preference. My characters are level 28-29 and I'm not really experiencing any kind of fatigue or boredom. There are TONS of quests so I don't really know what some people are talking about. But they are more errand type quests, and puzzles are limited to dungeons and fairly simple, but completing them is satisfying and the rewards are good. There are also a lot of 'find this critter and kill it' or 'find this lost adventurer' type of quests which rewards thorough exploration. And yes monsters are finite in any given area, including towers/tombs/dungeons, etc. You get a nice bonus when they are cleared. I go ahead and use permanent stat items when I find them. I've yet to encounter any quests that call for these types of items. Almost all of my good loot has come from the chests I've found. About the only thing I buy from vendors is food, spells and potions and an occasional jewelry trinket. I've found nice pieces of armor and weapons being sold, but that's pretty rare. I don't use shurikens so it's more of annoyance to me to get them in my inventory because of the added weight. Some of these thieves use them to great effect bleeding 3 of my characters with one turn; that would be nice to have I might try shurikens if I play again. I have to remember to sell those things when I visit a vendor to shed the weight, though since I don't use them. I have about 135k gold in reserve and probably should spend it on training points, and I bought a ship I can't use yet, but I keep waiting for expensive items to appear, but they haven't yet. But overall I love Lords of Xulima.

I loved LoX for the first 50 hours or so, but having played like 70 hours and still about halfway through, I just stopped playing it. My CRPG attention span drops dramatically after about 60 hours, at which point I just skip every side quest to finish the game, but can't even do that in LoX as I'm still far away from the end, so I quit it.

According to Steam, I finished the game (completing all side quests and exploring the entire map) in 55 hours, which includes a few times when I left the game on while I was eating lunch. It's long, but I didn't think it was ridiculously long.
