As is assault rifles are generally good almost always, heavy weapons and SMGs really good against light armour opponents and energy weapons really good high armor opponents. Unarmed is in general very effective. Bladed, blunt weapons, and pistols less so, though the pistol has the advantage, especially early in the game of having cheap and abundant ammo. I think Wasteland is pretty much a normal rpg as far a weapon balance goes.
Specifically:

1) Assault rifles have almost as long a range as sniper rifles, are just as accurate and can do burst head shots. There's really no need for a sniper rifle. They need to reduce the range of assault rifles.
2) Pistols take as many AP as an assault rifle at higher tiers so there's no reason to use them. They need to make pistols fast firing (fewer AP), short range weapons.
3) The energy weapon mechanic is all messed up. once you start facing enemies armed with energy weapons, you're better off naked than using armor, which makes no sense.
4) Heavy weapons/machine guns can't be modded, hence there's no reason to use them - they fall behind the curve of modded assault rifles.

There's been plenty of discussion on this on the Wasteland 2 forums and the consensus there is that weapons need to be rebalanced, and even the Wasteland team acknowledges this. You're swimming against the tide.

That would be expecting far too much.

Good to see the added support, though I finished it in November and have to say it was a pretty smooth play through then. Than again more polish is never a bad thing, this is the kind of game that another play through at some point in the future will likely be as fun as the first.

Huh. Well I am near the end of Arizona in my play through and so far my sniper has been by far my deadliest character, followed by my heavy weapons guy. Angela Deth was my assault rifle specialist and while she started out pretty badass, she seemed to fall behind most my other characters with different weapon specialties pretty quickly. And my sniper's range was far, far better.

It might feel that way early on when you don't have enough skill to use burst reliably. When that happens assault rifles rule, they're way OP. I agree a balance pass will make the game even more enjoyable, and like Grif mentioned the Armour mechanic is a bit off, although interesting…
