I'd like to talk about the successfully funded (but still campaigning) collect-a-thon adventure game Yooka-Laylee. From key RARE developers that worked on the likes of Banjo-Kazooie & Donkey Kong 64 comes a LONG overdo entry into the genre.
This has me excited; collect-a-thon games had depth over standard platformers. You could post about why they died out, but I'm more interested in their impending revival. Like RPG's, these games had their own way of conveying adventure. I'd wager that's why they're remembered so fondly.
Made under a modern context this game could lead to some great entertainment. Perhaps even a new dawn for collect-a-thons

I don't know if I'd say that they died out; the last Banjo Kazooie released was 2008. Some of the Mario games (3D Land) and several indie PC games (Giana Sisters, Fez, etc etc) are platformers that require collection of something to advance/unlock new levels.
Still, as a Banjo Kazooie spiritual successor this does look good, I'll probably play it when it's released.

I loved those 3D platformers but the genre slowly died after the N64 and the only games in this genre released in the last few years are Mario games I think.
I'm glad we're seeing devs trying to revive the genre, there was another kickstarter last year I think (hat in time?)
