Gamespot has an interesting video with the founder of the Museum of Arts and Digital Entertainment that shows the difficulties in preserving games over time and the reliance of games on online services.

Thanks to strong copy protection, most games will soon be forgotten.
What did ancient books help to survive into modern day - like the Beowulf, for example - ?
Copies. Illegal or legal copies, the Monks didn't care at their time.
They didn't even know what an "illegal copy" was.
The Beowulf survived in just 1 - ONE ! - copy.
Same with Tacitus' "Germania". Same with lots of other books.

Copyright law needs serious reform. Server requirements for games pretty much means a limited controlled existence at the moment. The EFF needs our support over organisations like the ESA.
