In a couple of screenshots I've seen, there is a reference to both "Science" and "Barter" which are both skills, so it looks like they are going to be in there somewhere. It's weird that there isn't a tab on the pipbody though

Removing skills from a Fallout game? How stupid is that? It's like making axes blunt weapons or making a Syndicate Ego-shooter.
It does not make any sense.

Steam is out of question. It's not convenient, it's not easy to use, it's not simple and fast. It's terrible.Bothka:

It makes a lot of sense in terms of how they've streamlined the systems for each game they've made.
Instead of pre-defining your character with tag skills, you probably simply pick perks that suit your preferences instead.
I know a lot of people think fewer visible numbers mean games are bad, but I don't really agree.
It all depends on what's there - and if they've expanded the perk system from FO3 and Skyrim, it could be great.

Good to know it has a firm release date now. I was still kind of thinking it would wind up getting released next year. I'll wait, though. It costs $70 Canadian, and that's far more than I'm willing to spend on a game. Here's to the inevitable ultimate edition at a deep discount on a Steam sale several years from now! =p

However, the "required rank 2" thing from the above screenshot does imply that they way skills work may have changed. I guess it's all speculation at this point, so not worth worrying about.
There is proof that they removed skills and totally rely on perks now. The Science!-perk comes in ranks, as perks always did.

So I just max Charisma at the start and win all dialogue? Not sure how I feel about that. (Actually serious - the skill ranges have always been pretty wide in Fallout, making it hard to gauge the right amount for your char.)

Looks like the biggest news about Fallout 4 was in the Microsoft conference: the Xbox One will support mods for Fallout 4.
and now we know why Bethesda.net exist….

Yeah, a lot of mixed feelings on much of this. Although I'll undoubtedly buy it in the long run, it's definitely not a day one purchase for me as I'm pretty leery of Bethesda's "evolution" of the franchise.

They managed to hit their cool-sounding 11/11/11 release date for Skyrim.

I'm loving it. I'm one of the few here in RPGWatch (but in the majority all around I guess) who prefer Bethesda over Obsidian. So far everything I've seen makes me confident I'll be more satisfied then with New Vegas. The one thing I'm a bit worried about is level scaling. Any news about that?

Yeah, level-scaling is an easy solution to open-world gameplay, and I don't think the average player hates it as much as most of us do.

Removal of skills seems bad, but we'll see.
Otherwise it looks great. I'll probably wait for a patched version with the DLC added, so perhaps in 2016-17.

There is no "skills" tab in the Pip-boy, only status, SPECIAL and perks and perks are charts now. See proof.
I could conceive of them having a simplified mode, or something like that, so that crappy consolers can play it more like a first person shooter. You have other, similar options in game. For example, you can play using either real-time combat or VATS. Then there was hardcore mode that was introduced in New Vegas.
Hmm, the last option is that I'm just more of an optimist than everyone else
I'm sure once the modders get hold of it, we'll see all the old skills, one way or another.

But we got Morrowind armor system back (layered armor) so I don't mind…not really.
