I'm pretty sure the reason they tried to hype up the announcement was because they desperately need the US citizens to get interested in space exploration. Think of it as their kickstarter campaign.

The US does nothing half ass when it comes to exploration of anything. Are you trying to tell me they went to the moon 46 years ago and there isn't a taco bell there now?
