One of the reasons I love Darkest Dungeon is that measuring the mental toll of adventuring feels so overdue. Game violence has been consequence-free for a long time, but that’s changing. The new Tomb Raider games show Lara Croft dealing with profound mental trauma, for example, and games like Viscera Cleanup Detail poke at shooters’ carefree bodycount.

Teetering on The Brink
That’s not even all of what’s going on, but you get the idea: it’s an incredible amount. A lesser game might collapse under the weight of so many detailed moving parts, but Darkest Dungeon ties it all together surprisingly well. Even so, in the later missions I found I spent at least as long planning a run as playing it, which is a little lopsided. It feels as though developer Red Hook might’ve had trouble saying no to cool-sounding feature ideas, and even though it pulls off an incredible feat by making it gel into an excellent game, I have to wonder if it might’ve benefitted from a little pruning for the sake of easing the burden of management in the late game.

The Verdict
Darkest Dungeon is a grim and merciless tactical strategy game whose great tension comes from its many layers of complexity, unpredictable randomization, and willingness to put our fragile characters in mortal danger if we dare to venture into its depths in search of treasure and glory. Brilliant narration and stiff yet surprisingly expressive animation make it easy to be drawn into its vague but tantalizing world, though the end feels artificially out of reach.
Score: 9.1/10

It deserves the good scores. I have played about 50 hours since release and think it is a fantastic game. Very unique and enjoy the graphics. I do not think it is as hard as everyone is saying. I have not lost any guys and have a bunch of lvl 4 characters. Have not had to use tavern or church much to relieve stress either. Playing on the hardest settings with corpses and stress heart attacks.
I have been playing these type of games since the 80's but I was hoping it would be a little harder since that is all I read about Darkest Dungeon. If you want to make a killer group use the Sunrise Stunners I think it is called. That's the crusader, hellion, plague doctor, and vestal. With the right trinkets I crush the enemy. Nothing can hold up to their stuns or healing or stress relief.
