Fallout 4 - First Add-Ons Announced
February 17th, 2016, 07:26
Well, I guess I'm the only one excited about the Workshop Settlement DLC. I just love, love, love, building my Fallout 4 settlement communities to be fully functional. And anything they can add to the relatively wonky interface and functionality will be welcome.
When my daughter comes home from college she has a PC that has the Sims on it. When home, she always spends a few hours on the PC getting her Sims game together. She refuses to take that PC back to college because she said the game would be way to distracting. After playing F4, now I can see why.
I love dressing my little settlers up, give them extra food, give them protective clothing, give them weapons, make sure they have decent sleep accommodations, and make their homes interesting. I actually feel sorry for my guards, who are mostly guarding 24/7, (Interestingly, my guards at Greentop Nursery actually take breaks???) so I always give my guards Nuke Colas. And I am now making sure all my guards have some kind of roof over their heads with a radio playing nearby. I also try to place a scavenger unit nearby, if my guard is not close to other people. I am obviously obsessed with this part of the game, but Hey! . . . look at my avatar . . .

What I'd love to see is a mod that marks, or better yet deletes, any dialogue choice that results in a Retardo AI quest being assigned.
Far Harbor sounds cool, but the only one of three I'd pay money for. I'll just buy it separately if the reviews are good.

Everyone's wish mod you're asking for is IMO impossible to happen.
The problem is in silly premises, for example Earth is devastated and instead of rebuilding there is some group of people out there fighting for robots' rights? How can you avoid retardo AI quests there?
As for DLC and the planned higher price for season pass, I think the thing finally got out of control. Completely. You may argue it back with Train Simulator and Sims games DLC spamming, but those are not RPG.
I've finished FO4, IMO it's a great game, but I just won't buy any crapDLC or expansion. Stop milking, leave me alone and go make FO5.
Or follow Square Enix' idea and make FO4-2. Then FO4-3:Assaultron Returns.
Standalone games.
P.S. I'd buy only DLC that returns classic Fallout perks removed because political correctness: sexpert, pornstar, childkiller and etc.

I just want everyone to know that complaining on this forum gets results. A mere 4 days after I went after them in this news thread for their 4 months of no information whatsoever http://www.rpgwatch.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32532
,
I got results.
How easy it is to underestimate the power of forum posting.

Well the first two seem like cash grabs. The only interesting one is Far Harbor, but it will cost you $25. Say what you want about Fallout 3 & NV, but at least the DLC was better.
Sad to see Bethesda joining the crappy overpriced DLC bandwagon.
PS: When will they f***** release the mod kit.

You know, I never bought any of Skyrim DLC either because they were too expensive for what they were and they came out so late that I tired of ever playing that game again. It looks like the same pattern is repeating for Fallout 4.

That's the approach I took for FO:NV. Didn't play it at all until a couple years after release. It was Obsidian, right? Had to wait for it to be fixed first.
Got the GotY (or whatever) version that included all the DLC. And some of the best DLC I've ever played. Plus lots of good mods available at that time. It wa a truly optimal way to get the most enjoyment out of that game.
This time I couldn't wait to play the base game. However, I can probably wait for their DLC. This ain't Obsidian. Good diverse writing and storytelling will probably be missing.

I have no problem with the announced price change. Anyone interested, can still get it before it happens. Anyone wanting more info first, likely hasn't even considered the season pass at all and will either wait for reviews, pick specific DLCs or wait for a future sale.
The content of the DLC however, hardly sparks a fire going back into F4.
- Only Far Harbor sounds like it could bring back some sorely missed roleplay possibilities, but I won't hold my hopes high.
- Automatron seems to be expanding on crafting. That itself isn't a bad thing, just not what I really want. Will see what they add on top of it, as it looks too much like "more crafting + radiant quests" so far.
- Wasteland Workshop sounds like Hearthfire for settlements, especially considering the price. Pretty much torn here, as HF for Skyrim turned out way more for me than it should have on paper, but settlements in F4 I'd have to consider seriously broken beyond repair.
- Settlers are dumber than a brick. They don't manage to find the crops I planted for them, not even a freakin' free bed next to the occupied one they're standing in front of, even with 3 free beds around them. No, I have to manually set them.
It's ok when I have to setup guys for guard duty, as I likely should outfit them better anyway, but give the 15 guys answering my radio call a brain, so that they don't stand outside of the (prebuild) fence doing nothing.
- Minutemen are useless. Apparently there's a system where settlements can call for the Minutemens help. Fire a flare gun and they come… but the game doesn't use it. No, I have to get to the settlement and do it for the settlers, as they're incapable of doing so. If I don't, no Minutemen response to the alert, ever - despite that I have been send there by Preston Garvey himself. It all falls on the player. That's NOT an active gameworld.
- …speaking of active gameworld. No, it doesn't matter how many settlements you run (which should increase the Minutemens strength) before heading towards the Castle. You'll end up with the same amount of scripted Minutemen as help…
- Preston fuckin' Garvey sending me to the most craptastic places as potential settlements. Like Tenpines Bluff, a settlement with 2 guys and the potential for about 5 more guys.
Or Coastal Cottage. No beds, no food, right next to the shore (which you can't use for water), no place to build on, two broken unusable buildings, which leads me to the next point…
- Why can't I fix broken buildings? Seems to be that much easier fixing a broken roof on an otherwise intact home, than building a completely new house. Or at least, let me scrap them to get building place.
- Prefab homes. Great for those who don't want to go Minecraft-all-over. But tell me…. what is the nr.1 reason to build a house? To protect you from the weather.
Only… they don't. They leak harder than any Swiss cheese has holes and a Rad-storm passes through it, with seemingly no options on the players side to fix it.
- Settlements not reaching a point of being able to defend themselves. My friend Preston Garvey coming to me and telling me the Slog having problems with Raiders.
"WHAT? … No… can't be! ..I… no, just no."
Not only did I leave all of my spare (and indestructible) companions there, but that settlement has a defense of over 130+. The last Supermutant raiding party (including a suicider and a legendary) didn't even made it onto the freakin' lawn. But now they're having problems with raiders…
- The radiant system sending me to places, that make no sense. Like Nordhagen Beach having Ghoul problems from… Four Leaf Fishpacking? Those Ghouls have 2 options: swimming across the sea (passing right through the Brotherhoods stronghold) or on land through half of Boston…
or Warwick having problems with Raiders near …Bunker Hill? That's half across the map. Really?
- Let me tell Preston fuckin' Garvey "No". No, I haven't put up a beacon 'cause that place sucks. Drop that place off your list and never mention it again. You made me your boss right? RIGHT? Then go back to work and bring me realistic options.
- give settlers a brain, even a very basic one. Currently they have one that (barely) qualifies them for finding the next bottle of booze…
- give me a point to reach, where settlements no longer suffer from random raids / attacks. Something like (amount of food + water available + settlers) x2 - defense = X% chance. If below 0, no more raids.
Even as a Bethesda fanboy I have to say, that the whole settlement thing is the first part where I have to agree with the assertion: "Modders will have to fix it".

Settlements only served one purpose to me…..I erected as many turrets as I could, then left. With fifty turrets or so at each village, I never had to wonder about my folk being in distress. When next I visited, I just climbed over the bodies stacked around the place, did my thing and motored on. Yeah, I had to dedicate like two hours in the beginning to load up on metals and toasters but it was completely worth it for the state of mind it gave.
And ya, Preston is a jag-off. I'm hoping that the very first expansion will just delete towns and whatnot.
