Nice documentary. The guy is really critical of his work in the comments, but to me it feels like a rough draft for a full-on Ken Burns style D&D documentary. Hope he keeps up the work.

Yes, I think it would be worth tidying up the rough edges. He's a got a good little documentary here.
It reminded me how good and how important the sound design was in the BG games. Made such a huge difference.

Nice/interesting work. Extra points for using Summoning for total fantasy music.

I worked for Control Data Corporation from 1980-1987. I was also an Instructor on the PLATO system and did some programming in the PLATO author language. I played most of those games back in the day and they sparked my interest to this day for CRPGs. The PLATO system was really way ahead of its time with all the functions of the internet as we know it today. Email, public forums/discussion groups, live chat term-to-term -- the whole nine yards. heady days, kids. Heady days.

Now I'm interested in playing Knights of the Chalice.

If you've not played Knights of the Chalice as of yet, you really should. I've played that game through three times so far, and it is utterly fantastic. If you even remotely enjoy turn based combat, you're really missing out by not trying this one!

Having now watched the video, it's clear I must try the Gold Box games!

My favorite (other the D&D Online) is the PSP game Dungeons and Dragons Tactics. It represents the turn based tactical situation really well. The one thing I didn't like about it was how you had to open the chests before leaving the dungeon or you'll miss them, that is one mechanic I've seen in a few other games and needs to die in the deepest dungeon of hell.
